For those of us in the chilly northern hemisphere, the days might just be getting a little longer, but it is still cold enough to warrant dreaming of sunnier skies and warmer climates. If you are willing to travel over the equator to the Southern Hemisphere, there are plenty of holiday spots in which you can get some winter sun - but with half of the globe to explore, it can be hard to know where to start!
Here, we have narrowed down three of our favourite Southern Hemisphere locations - where will this winter take you?
Accessed from the gateway that is the capital city of Jakarta, Indonesia is made up of some 17,000 islands, making for the perfect beach retreat. Sitting just south of the equator, you can expect seemingly endless azure waters and golden coasts from the islands of Bali to Bintan - as well as temperatures in the high 20s (°C) or low 80s (°F) from January to March.
Scuba diving, jungle exploration and lots of relaxation are the main activities available here, but make sure you stop by Jakarta for a taste of big city life with a difference.
Although it is one of the smaller countries of Africa, Rwanda is a destination that is growing in popularity - and that is in no small part a result of the stunning and rare mountain gorillas that inhabit the Virunga Mountains.
Staying in Kigali gives you the best of both worlds: you will be situated in the buzzing centre of Kigali, and just 20 minutes from the airport, but also a short distance away from what is sure to be an amazing experience - witnessing the mountain gorillas first hand! Of course, the climate is beautifully distant from a cold winter, too - you can expect temperatures from around 26°C / 78°F between February and March. Perfect for a winter sun break with a twist!
There are few places that dare to claim to be as idyllic as the Seychelles. Sitting just off of the coast of East Africa, the islands enjoy temperatures in the high 20s (°C) or low 80s (°F) from February through to May. Combine the warm weather with sweeping coasts, beautiful sunsets and divine cuisine, and you might find yourself describing the Seychelles as paradise!
There is more to the Seychelles than just rest and relaxation - there are two UNESCO World Heritage Sites on hand for those that need a little more out of their holiday - but there are no better corners from which to enjoy it than Mahé Island.
Hopefully you have discovered plenty of inspiration when it comes to seeking out some winter sun - the best way to survive the cooler seasons is to escape them, after all!
