The Swiss Alps are a beautiful holiday destination for friends, families and couples. Breath-taking scenery, beautiful lakes and famous peaks await you – here’s why you should book your trip now.
Hit the slopes
You can’t visit the Swiss Alps without enjoying the slopes and snowsports. The Swiss Alps are home to some of the top skiing destinations in the world, along with the greatest ski resorts and slopes that people come from all over the world to enjoy.
Zermatt is a popular ski destination for thrill seekers, with the highest winter sports area in the Alps; it’s also home to the world-famous Matterhorn mountain. Verbier is also incredibly popular, with steep descents and a lively resort atmosphere, while Davos-Klosters, Grindelwald and Arosa Lenzerheide are also famed resorts and well worth a visit.
St. Moritz is another famous ski resort in the Alps. It’s one of the world’s oldest winter sports resorts and has hosted the Winter Olympics on two occasions. St. Moritz provides plenty of great slopes for all levels to enjoy, but if you are more experienced then don’t miss Corviglia - the famous World Cup run that stands at 2,486 metres.
Marvel at the Matterhorn
The Mattherhorn is the world's most photographed mountain and the most recognisable peak in the Alps. Standing at 14,692 feet, the Matterhorn is a Swiss landmark and towers over the surrounding ski resorts and Alpine views.
The Matterhorn is located at the border between the Swiss ski resort of Zermatt and the Italian town of Breuil-Cervinia. There are plenty of hiking routes around the mountain and this is the best way to take in the stunning mountain view. The Matterhorn is notoriously difficult to climb however, and should only be attempted by expert mountaineers.
Visit the top of Europe by train
Standing at 3,454 metres above sea level, Jungfraujoch is the highest train station in Europe. It’s located between two famous mountains, Mönch and Jungfrau.
The cogwheel train is the only way to reach the train station, and the two-and-a-half-hour journey to Jungfraujoch begins at the town of Interlaken, but you can join along at any of the stops.
The views you experience along the journey are truly spectacular, and visitors will travel through beautiful villages including Kleine-Scheidegg, Lauterbrunnen, Wengen and Grindelwald. Expect to see grassy hills, snowy mountains and beautiful lakes at every turn. Once you reach Jungfraujoch, visitors can stop off and enjoy the spectacular views at one of the two viewing platforms at the station.
Journey along the Bernina Express
Another spectacular train journey, the Bernina Express crosses the entire Swiss Alps to take you all the way along to Tirano in Italy. The Rhaetian Railway's Bernina route was even added to the UNESCO World Heritage list and is definitely the most beautiful way to travel across the Alps.
The Bernina Express’s route takes you from Chur-Landquart-Davos-St.Moritz-Valposchiaov-Tirano, and you can expect to see beautiful Alpine valleys, glaciers, and mountain peaks along the way.
The journey is considered one of the most beautiful railway trips in the world – so make sure you buy your tickets and experience it for yourself!
Relax by the beautiful lakes of St. Moritz
It’s not just about mountains in the Alps – they are home to a number of beautiful lakes too. St. Moritz has two lakes, and they are among the best in the region.
St. Moritz lake is best visited in the warmer months, and one of the most popular things to do there is simply take a walk and enjoy the stunning scenery. There is a popular five-kilometre trail around St. Moritz that takes around one or two hours, and is the perfect way to spend a sunny afternoon. It is usually too cold to swim in lake St. Moritz, but you can take a paddleboard or canoe and sail across the lake if you would like.
Lake Staz, alternatively, is a popular swimming spot in the summer. It is shallower than Lake St. Moritz so heats up better, and even has a small beach for you to soak up the sun rays.
