The afternoon tea tradition is believed to have begun at the beginning of the 19th century, at the palace of the seventh Duchess of Bedford, Anna Mary Stanhope. Unable to stand her hunger at noon, during long breaks between meals, the Duchess demanded that tea and light snacks be served in her room in the late afternoon. Such suppression of hunger became the habit of the duchess and soon spread among the nobility and became a fashionable social phenomenon.
