The traditional commercial centre of Dubai, Deira is home to a number of Arab markets known as souks. Atmospheric and interesting places, they invoke the feeling of ancient Arabia, and there are plenty to choose from, including the textile-based Covered Souk, gleaming Gold Souk and fragrant Spice Souk. All have existed for centuries, located across from the docks, where exotic goods from the east were off-loaded into the city.
Whether you are hunting for a beautiful and one-of-a-kind gift for a special someone, or want to pick up a wonderful souvenir of your time spent in Dubai, the souks are the place to visit – just be sure to haggle!
The Gold Souk
Gold souks are found in many cities in the Middle East, but Deira’s is one of the largest retail gold markets in the world, comprising hundreds of gold vendors offering row upon row of ornaments and intricate pieces of jewellery at surprisingly low prices. The street-front shops hide narrow alleys of smaller stores with glittering window displays – even if you are not in the market, it is an incredible place to visit.
The Spice Souk
A little bit further from the Gold Souk, embark on a journey of a thousand scents at the Spice Souk. Wandering down narrow lanes, you will be presented with a huge variety of spices, herbs, flowers and more – a heady selection that are sold out of open sacks or formed into beautifully vibrant piles.
The Covered Souk
Looking for the perfect souvenir? Head to the Covered Souk, where you will be sure to find a perfect item to bring home to your family and friends, among other household goods and children's toys. This is the most conventional of the souks, but is still a brilliant place to pick up a bargain, and an exciting departure from the traditional retail experience.
