Join Hungarians in their celebration of Hungary’s statehood, discover traditional folk crafts and enjoy one of the world’s most spectacular fireworks displays.

One of the most beloved state celebrations, 20 August has always featured fireworks, even in the drab days of communism. Hungarians mark various occasions on this day: the feast of the new bread, as well as Constitution Day and Saint Stephan’s Day, or the birth of Hungary’s statehood in Europe. Stephen I, or King Saint Stephen (975–1038), was crowned King of Hungary in 1000, making him the first such leader in the history of the country. Under his rule, the Hungarian tribes abandoned Paganism and adopted Christianity.

The celebrations have, in recent years, grown to be a festival in their own right. The Festival of Arts and Crafts takes place in the wondrous Castle District amongst quaint mediaeval buildings and grand monarchical palaces, keeping alive hundreds of years of trade and craftsmanship. Here, certified folklore artists have the opportunity to showcase their talent and expertise and sell their wares, from carved woodwork to animal-hide products. You can also sample staple Hungarian dishes and drinks at the many food stalls at the festival.

The fireworks may well be the highlight of the 20 August celebrations in the evening, but the day also offers plenty of diverse fun. From concerts to happenings, various landmarks across Pest and Buda present activities for children and families, as well as music fans. In the evening, seasoned Hungarians flock to the embankment on both sides of the Danube or seek out the best views in the central Buda Hills, like Gellért Hill or the Castle, to watch the sparks and accompanying musical and laser light entertainment. Situated right in the centre of Budapest, Kempinski Corvinus is within easy reach of the festival’s venues and the Danube Embankment.
