Sustainability at Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz

Sustainability

Sustainability and environmental protection are core values at the Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski St. Moritz. Our commitment to a greener future is evident in a wide range of initiatives to conserve resources and protect the environment. You can read about Kempinski's broader ESG approach here.

Waste and Recycling

Recycling bins are available throughout the hotel, enabling guests and staff to separate waste for recycling. We are working towards eliminating single-use plastics and have replaced many items, such as bottles, stirrers and straws, with sustainable alternatives. For instance, we use refillable dispensers for hygiene products. While we acknowledge that some plastic usage remains, such as in-room bins and departure bottled water, we are actively working on becoming a plastic-free hotel.

Sapo Cycle – Making Use of Discarded Soaps

Our housekeeping team is dedicated to sustainable practices, collecting unused soaps and toiletries left by guests. These items are donated to Sapo Cycle, a Swiss organisation partnering with Wohnwerk, which creates employment opportunities for adults with disabilities. The soaps are recycled into new, hygienic bars, and liquid toiletries are repurposed. These products are then distributed to families in need, refugee camps across Europe, and developing countries, helping to improve hygiene and support communities facing hardship.

Water Conservation

All our toilets and showers are equipped with water-saving technology to minimise water usage. Guests are encouraged to opt out of daily room cleaning and to reuse towels, further reducing water consumption. We have introduced water coolers and dispensers to replace single-use plastic bottles, although this is not yet implemented in all areas.

Energy and Greenhouse Gases

Our energy supply includes a significant proportion of renewable resources. The use of energy-efficient LED lighting and double-glazed windows helps reduce energy consumption. We have invested in KITRO devices and work closely with local producers who supply us with fresh, organic products to minimise food waste. We offer a variety of vegetarian and vegan dishes to our guests. Additionally, we utilise an electric car for short-distance guest transportation, contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions.

Destination and Local Community

The Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski reinvests a portion of its revenue into projects supporting the local community and sustainable development. We organise tours and activities through local guides and businesses, boosting the local economy. Regional artists are given a platform to showcase their work, and our guests are educated about the ecosystems, traditions and cultures of the destination.

Food

At the Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski, we proudly offer a diverse selection of vegan dishes that cater to our guests' dietary preferences, ensuring a delightful and sustainable dining experience.

We take pride in sourcing food and beverage products locally, labelled as Km0, and prioritising seasonal ingredients. This approach reduces transportation emissions, supports the local economy, and delivers fresher, superior-quality ingredients to our breakfast buffet and menus. Our team works closely with regional suppliers to bring the best of the season to your plate.

At Grand Restaurant Les Saisons, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact through innovative solutions. Our water dispenser system significantly cuts down on the transportation of glass water bottles, both new and empty. By providing filtered water on-site, we lower carbon emissions and minimise waste, ensuring a sustainable dining experience without compromising quality.

Let`s explore more

Kitro – Food Waste Management System

Our culinary team actively drives our sustainability commitment by reducing food waste with the Kitro management system. Kitro enables us to precisely monitor the types and quantities of food waste produced in our kitchen, providing valuable insights into guest preferences and consumption patterns. This information allows us to refine our processes for greater efficiency. We are delighted to share that we have reduced food waste per guest by 6% and lowered total waste by 11%, thanks to Kitro and the dedication of our staff.

Organic and fair-trade products

Our commitment to sustainability extends to offering organic and fair-trade products. During winter, our menus and buffet labels highlight certified organic produce, dairy, meat, and poultry, alongside fair-trade coffee, tea, and chocolate. These choices support ethical labour practices and environmentally responsible farming, ensuring every bite aligns with our values.

Certified Fish Suppliers

We partner with certified fish suppliers to ensure traceability and sustainability. Our seafood comes from responsible fisheries, certified by organisations like the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), or local sources that avoid endangered or overfished species. This allows us to serve delicious fish dishes while protecting marine ecosystems for future generations.

Nature

To protect wildlife, we do not display or keep wild animals for guest interaction at our hotel. We feature extensive green spaces which enhance the hotel’s beauty and provide habitats for various plants and animals. Most of our food is sourced from organic producers, and we strive to offset a portion of our CO2 emissions.

Commitment and Certifications

Our dedication to sustainability has been recognised with the EarthCheck Silver certification, which acknowledges our efforts in environmental protection and social responsibility.

We are proud to support MortAlife, a pioneering project devoted to protecting the Morteratsch Glacier near Pontresina. In our commitment to preserving the unique ecological landscape and the natural beauty of the Engadin, our hotel contributed CHF 10,000 in the summer of 2024. These funds were raised during the 2023/24 winter season, thanks to the generous support of our guests. To further assist this vital cause, we invite our guests to donate CHF 1 per night of their stay. Additionally, proceeds from the sale of furniture from our guest room renovations have been added to our contribution. Join us in safeguarding our environment for future generations.
