VCUQatar fashion design students to create signature wardrobe for the iconic Lady in Red of Marsa Malaz Kempinski
Doha, 25 February 2015 – Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl – Doha, has today announced a landmark collaboration with Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQatar), offering local fashion design students the opportunity to secure a 6-month internship at Qatar’s new ultra-luxury resort, by creating a bespoke wardrobe collection for the Lady in Red.
Kempinski’s iconic Lady in Red is a unique concept synonymous with the five-star hotel's trademark of personalised luxury. Described as the First Lady of the hotel, the Lady in Red complements the prestigious concierge role and is easily recognisable with her elegant persona and signature red clothing. The Lady in Red ensures guests feel welcomed, comfortable and cared for, with no task or request too much to fulfil. She is the Ambassadrice par excellence of Kempinski.
Marsa Malaz Kempinski’s collaboration with Qatar’s leading art and design school is part of the vibrant learning experiences at VCUQatar, helping to build and maintain indispensable connections for both partners in the local community. Eight local students in the Senior Fashion Class will compete to design the Lady in Red custom-made collection, with the winner not only be rewarded with their designs being fashioned into a bespoke wardrobe, but also an internship at Marsa Malaz Kempinski. This will offer the budding designer an exclusive look at Doha’s new ultra-luxury destination, whilst learning valuable insights into the premium travel, food, fashion and hospitality industries.
Wissam Suleiman, General Manager, Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl – Doha, said: “This unique opportunity is a project we feel very passionately about as we look to nurture home-grown designers and artisans. We are honoured to be working with such inspiring talents at VCUQatar. The Lady in Red is an iconic figure for Qatar’s new premier destination, and as such needs a chic and bespoke wardrobe, which we hope will reflect Qatar’s rich heritage whilst maintaining the identity and style of Kempinski.”
“We are delighted when opportunities like these come along as they offer the students the chance to implement their design skills at the highest level, working with a world renowned brand, said Sandra Wilkins, chair of the Fashion Department at VCUQatar. “Students are challenged to really consider how fashion functions in the real world. They have to think critically not only about the form and function of the garments but also the suitability of the designs to meet the clients needs.”
