The Seychelles’ rich and abundant marine biodiversity makes this remote Indian Ocean destination a veritable playground for anglers and game fishers from across the globe. Not only does the Seychelles’ tropical climate all but guarantee a pleasant day at sea (temperatures rarely drop below 26°C / 78.8°F and the sun is almost always shining), but the chances of landing a decent-sized fish are quite good. Bonito, dorado, sailfish, tuna and wahoo are all abundant in the waters surrounding the Seychelles’ granitic inner islands, with a greater variety of species occurring further out. Fly fishing on the Seychelles’ outer islands is thought to be amongst the best in the world. Make Kempinski Seychelles Resort your base on Mahé, before venturing out to one of the remote outer island groups.
While the Seychelles offers excellent fishing year-round, the optimal time to take to the seas is between October and November, when the south-east trade winds have dropped and the rainy season is yet to begin.
Fishing licences are not required for recreational fishing in the Seychelles, and travellers are free to fish in most areas falling outside of the Seychelles’ vast marine parks. Despite this fact, shore fishing is not a popular pastime in the Seychelles, and guests are encouraged to bring their own equipment if they would like to partake in this activity.
Deep-sea fishing is by far the more popular pursuit and there are countless fishing charters and packages available for anglers with every degree of experience, from weathered game-fish hunters to first-time fishermen and beginners who could benefit from the guidance of an experienced local guide. A fishing trip in the Seychelles is sure to be a highlight in your angling career.
