Bangkok, known locally as Krung Thep, serves as the capital city of Thailand. Established as the capital in 1782, it is situated within the Chao Phraya River delta, approximately 16 miles (25 km) from the Gulf of Thailand. Bangkok’s unique topography consists of low-lying estuary terrain with an average elevation of about 5 feet (1.5 m) above sea level, offering a completely flat landscape. The nearest range of hills lies 25 miles (40 km) to the southeast. Home to over 14 million residents in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region, the city stands as Thailand’s cultural and commercial epicentre, surrounded by small towns and villages.
Climate
Bangkok experiences a tropical savannah climate, influenced by the South Asian monsoon system. The year unfolds in three distinct seasons: hot, rainy and cool. December marks the coolest period, with average temperatures around 72 °F (22 °C), while April sees the hot season peak, with average temperatures soaring to 96 °F (35 °C). The rainy season typically starts in mid-May and extends through October. Monthly relative humidity levels fluctuate, ranging from around 60% during the cold season to over 80% in the rainy season.
