Established by King Rama IV on crown land in the 1920s, the 142-ac tropical oasis is one of Bangkok’s most cherished attractions. Serving as one of the few sizable parks in central Bangkok, Lumphini Park sees significant foot traffic, especially in the early evenings when joggers dominate its main pathway. However, within its boundaries, there’s ample opportunity to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in nature.
For an optimal experience, consider visiting during the early morning or late evening when the air is refreshingly crisp or pleasantly balmy. During these times, you’ll witness a lively scene, with Thai-Chinese individuals engaging in activities such as t’ai chi, aerobics or a unique half-run, half-walk jogging approach, which proves sensible amidst the city’s sweltering humidity.
Lumphini Park offers an array of attractions, including paddleboats for romantic outings, playgrounds for children and rustic outdoor gym areas. Nestled in the southeastern corner of the park, a picturesque Chinese-style clock tower designed by the renowned Italian architect Mario Tamagno adds historical charm to the lush greenery. Originally constructed for the Siamrath Phipitthapan Trade Fair in 1925, this architectural gem serves as an intriguing subject for photography.
As you explore the park, you’ll encounter more than 30 species of birds flitting among the giant trees, while monitor lizards and turtles inhabit its waterways. Additional park amenities include a library, sports centre and outdoor fitness facilities.
