In The Name Of Art - Kempinski Expresses European Culture Perfectly

Shanghai, 17th December 2012, - The Kempinski Arts Programme, which was established in 2009, is another sign of the creative spirit of Kempinski Hotels. While deeply rooted in its long tradition of European hospitality, Kempinski is on the forefront of new initiatives in today’s fast changing world. Kempinski feels that arts and culture are a necessity, not a luxury.

The Kempinski Arts Programme was established to support young artists in the making. Its mission is to work with arts organisations to increase cultural awareness, further international education in the arts and fulfil Kempinski’s commitment to refinement and culture.

Viola Yesiltaç was born in Hannover, Germany and lives and works in Istanbul, Cologne and NYC. She has been exhibiting internationally with a recent Solo shows in 2012 at the DJCAD, Dundee Scotland, UK. Balice Hertling & Lewis, NYC and is participating in this years The Imminence of Poetics 30th São Paulo Biennial, Brazil 2012.

With an MFA in photography from the Royal College of Art London and a prominent track record of performances, Viola pinpoints time as the crucial factor in her practice. Reproducing and presenting photographs of a defunct signage factory, domestic settings and interior designs in drawings, sculptures, performances and photography, her work reveals the transition from fiction to reality.

Her recent body of work consists of drawings made with brushes and calligraphy ink. These drawings are created in an instant and capture a thought or memory from days gone by. Through the exposure of these works, she has been told her brushwork resembles Chinese calligraphy. This inspired Viola to learn more about Chinese calligraphy and its history.

Viola came to China through the support of the Kempinski Art Programme, and she began her trip in Shanghai and Suzhou. She visited different kinds of art exhibitions on the journey. Mr Wang Nanming, a famous artist, critic and independent planner gave her guidance on Chinese calligraphy. Viola gave the programme her endorsement, saying, “As an artist, got a real understanding and attention from the Kempinski Arts Programme.” As a demonstration of the brand’s cultural values and to support the world of art substantially, THE ONE Executive Suites managed by Kempinski - Shanghai provided Viola the best living environment during her trip to Shanghai.

The Kempinski Arts Programme is active in two art forms which go beyond borders and are above language barriers: Classical Music and Visual Arts. Fully funded Fellowships are awarded to at least four recipients per year. Flexible, tailored programmes are designed to suit their immediate needs. The Kempinski Arts Programme cooperates with the most prestigious arts institutions around the world. The focus is on youth, talent, cross-cultural education and exposure.

Kempinski Arts Fellows have become effective speakers and ambassadors demonstrating that the arts are a powerful vehicle for communication, a way to express visions that are beyond the capacity of words. Hotels can and should be crossroads where the vital interaction of ideas, experience and expression takes place. This programme clearly confirms Kempinski’s commitment to a cultural dialogue with the public and within the company.
