Carved out of the bedrock next to the Pyramids, the Great Sphinx was built between 2558 and 2532 BC during the reign of the Pharaoh Khafre. The oldest monument in Egypt, it once looked very different, painted in bright blue, red and yellow. It has been worshipped for millennia, as a true icon of the Nile.
