Zoltán Lonovics' ‘Sanctuary Reframed’ Exhibition at the Kempinski Promenade Gallery

Kempinski Hotel Corvinus Budapest - Lobby

Budapest, 11 March 2026 — Zoltán Lonovics' exhibition, ‘Sanctuary Reframed,’ is now open at the Promenade Gallery on the ground floor of Kempinski Hotel Corvinus Budapest.

In his latest works, Lonovics builds upon the forms and colours recognisable from his earlier series as a starting point, taking them further to create new pieces. His artistic creations transport visitors to novel worlds that not only straddle the boundary between fine art and graphic design but also draw connections to the vibrant performing arts scene and the alternative, even underground, world.

In his latest paintings and giclée prints, he incorporates his anthropomorphic work photos, originally taken during fashion shoots, in a collage-like style, with them being damaged, blurred or distorted. He continues to employ the embroidery technique featured in his earlier works, utilising special materials, a characteristic colour palette and the striking, unique elements that define his style. The English word ‘sanctuary’ denotes a place of refuge or a sacred space, underscoring the artist's intimate, inspiring and personal experiences, which also serve as an artistic refuge for him. Alongside human faces, legs and hands, transformer-inspired or robotic bird and dinosaur-like heads appear on the special velvet surfaces, which, when used together, form innovative compositions.

The faces depicted by Lonovics, which draw inspiration from techno and popular culture, are somewhat reminiscent of the cubist head depictions by Juan Gris, Paul Klee and Pablo Picasso. In his works, anthropomorphic motifs are deliberately distorted, yet their visual language preserves elements of their traditional meaning.

Through messages that bridge high art and popular culture, Lonovics' works create meaningful, timeless emotional and intellectual experiences for everyone, consistently inspiring further reflection.

During his studies at MOME, Lonovics became the art director of The Room magazine, a bilingual, biannual publication produced in Budapest focusing on fashion and contemporary art. The magazine was distributed in major European cities and New York. Lonovics is currently the art director of Móra Kiadó, one of Hungary's leading book publishers, and also teaches at two institutions: Metropolitan University and KREA – School of Contemporary Arts.
