The Palace of Arts (MÜPA) traditionally hosts its annual Wagner Days festival in the early summer weeks, dedicating its stages to the German composer’s oeuvre. Modestly titled Wagner Days, the festival spans over two weeks and presents a diverse range of works starring some of the finest classical musical talent and opera directors.
The programme will no doubt serve as a teaser to delve into more Wagner in the following year.
Richard Wagner (1813–1883) was a German musical wizard, mostly known for his dramatically charged operas, for which, uncharacteristically for his time, he wrote both the libretto and music. He also broke tradition by fusing poetry, music and drama into his mise-en-scène, calling it Gesamtkunstwerk, or ‘total work of art’. The scale and scope of his dramatic vision are most evident in his Ring Cycle, The Ring of the Nibelung, which comprises four operas. A theorist and essayist, his Tristan and Isolde are considered by critics the foundation of modern opera.
Wagner was friends with Hungary’s own musical superstar, Franz Liszt, and at one point considered taking up residence in Hungary.
