A lush oasis in the heart of the city
Located on the southern end of the historic Grand Canal, the 344-room hotel is the new pinnacle of luxury in idyllic Hangzhou.
Hangzhou, China, 1 July 2019 – Inspired by the city’s beautiful natural surroundings and rich heritage, Kempinski Hotel Hangzhou is now open.
Nestled along the southern end of the extraordinary Grand Canal – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – lies the exclusive lifestyle destination that is Kempinski Hotel Hangzhou. The all-new hotel, with its signature dining destinations, exceptional meeting spaces and bespoke luxury facilities, is a beacon of modernity in one of China’s seven ancient national capitals.
“We are pleased to welcome the first Kempinski property in Zhejiang province and the 19th property in China,” says Michael Henssler, Chief Operating Officer Asia, Kempinski Hotels and Member of the Management Board. “Kempinski Hotel Hangzhou marks the brand’s inaugural partnership with Sino-Ocean Group, representing the new generation of Kempinski Hotels. We aim to grow selectively over the long term with hotels that reflect our ethos of craftsmanship and offer the ideal landscape for both leisure and business guests to travel in style with Kempinski.”
“Our new deluxe hotel is the first five-star hotel in the Grand Canal area in Hangzhou. With our thoughtfully stylish and innovative design, coupled with a range of luxurious offerings, the hotel will bring more dynamism to the area and help guests to unwind in Hangzhou’s rich history and culture,” says Franz Richter, General Manager of Kempinski Hotel Hangzhou.
Elegant Design Inspired by Nature
The hotel is located within a large mixed-use complex, including shopping, residential and office units, and flanked by historical blocks, and museums as well as the landmark Gongchen Bridge. Featuring 344 rooms and suites across nine room categories, including 132 with Grand Canal views, Kempinski Hotel Hangzhou has 83 suites, which is the largest number in the city.
Designed by ACID Singapore, the five-star, 14-storey hotel incorporates the property’s natural surroundings into the luxurious design. The gentle curves of the open-plan guestrooms, cool timber flooring and elegant finishing reflect the bends of the Grand Canal as well as the tranquillity and fluidity of water. Each guest is greeted by a larger-than-life chandelier in the lobby, inspired by the snow-tipped branches of willow trees that dot the banks of the West Lake. Sheer, hand-painted fabrics, each embroidered with images of Tang Dynasty court ladies weaving Hangzhou silk, adorn the sliding panels on the wall, a subtle nod to the area’s history.
Timeless Heritage, Modern Lifestyle
The city of Hangzhou has been a favourite of travellers, including Marco Polo, who arrived in the 13th century and declared it “without a doubt the finest and most splendid city in the world”. Its natural beauty has inspired poets and painters for centuries, and today, Kempinski Hotel Hangzhou brings luxurious modern comforts to all its guests. A world-class health club with a generously sized lap pool sits alongside Kempinski The Spa. The luxurious spa sanctuary will have Hangzhou’s only private spa terrace, complete with outdoor massage pavilions, relaxing daybeds and group lounging areas that draw on the beauty and tranquility of the West Lake. Guests can expect its signature services, alongside new, tailor-made treatments to rejuvenate weary travelers or indulge city dwellers who are looking for a pampering session.
Six Gastronomic Experiences Await
The art of dining is at the heart of Kempinski Hotel Hangzhou, with a myriad of choices for guests to delight in. For the perfect business meal, Zi Chen Chinese Restaurant serves classic Hangzhou and Cantonese dishes, carefully prepared with the freshest ingredients. Kitchen@K is the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant, offering a wide range of international cuisines, while the timeless Lobby Lounge is the perfect backdrop to a charming afternoon tea or evening cocktail. Morph Rooftop Bar, located on the 14th floor, will be the newest jewel in Hangzhou’s nightlife crown. Conceptualised by Ashley Sutton – the mastermind behind some of Asia’s most famous bar designs, including The Iron Fairies – it conjures up a dreamscape filled with butterflies, complete with superlative entertainment that will make for a night to remember.
For the first time in China, Kempinski Hotel Hangzhou is launching two signature dining concepts, which pay tribute to Kempinski founder Berthold Kempinski and his daughter Frieda – both legendary luxury hoteliers that have set the foundation for the brand today. Berthold Delikatessen offers homemade breads, pastries, sandwiches, and seasonal and local favourites, together with a renowned speciality coffee that will set a new standard in the city. Frieda reflects its namesake’s warmhearted and generous hospitality in a relaxed space, where diners can enjoy a reinterpretation of traditional German cuisine with a modern twist. The restaurant delivers authentic and timeless culinary experiences to local trendsetters, regional businessmen, families and international tourists alike.
