As part of the international luxury hotel group Kempinski Hotels and uniquely located within the High Tatras National Park, we place particular emphasis on our environmental impact and hold a strong sense of responsibility towards our employees, guests and the local community. We are therefore continuously working to improve our operations in support of environmental protection and to expand our network of local suppliers and service providers, ensuring an optimal luxury travel experience for our guests for years to come.
In cooperation with the renowned EarthCheck Certified Programme for hotels, we are committed to implementing more sustainable hotel management processes. Grand Hotel Kempinski High Tatras has proudly held Bronze Certification since 2023, and we are now striving to achieve Silver Certification.
To qualify for certification, we have established clear objectives across key areas such as energy efficiency, water and waste management, careful supplier selection, health and safety for employees and guests, support for the local community and preservation of local customs and traditions.
Sustainability has become embedded in our daily operations, forming an essential part of our employee culture and the guest experience.
The High Tatras National Park is not only our neighbour but also our valued partner. Our shared goal is to preserve and protect the natural beauty surrounding our hotel. Together with you, our guests, we contribute to the sustainable use of the national park and its resources, ensuring that the majestic mountains and the lake Štrbské Pleso can be enjoyed for generations to come.
We are improving our energy efficiency and environmental sustainability with LED lighting and have optimised our heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems to reduce energy consumption.
We actively monitor water consumption and have implemented water treatment processes. A green garden above the hotel’s main entrance and rainwater collection containers further supports our conservation efforts.
We carefully separate all recyclable materials, including paper, cardboard packaging, electrical waste, bottles, printer cartridges and food waste. In partnership with a local company, we have also invested in a compactor for paper and plastic, significantly reducing CO2 emissions by minimising the frequency of collections.
Our Executive Chef is a passionate advocate for zero-waste kitchen practices. The culinary team is committed to using local ingredients in full, sourcing responsibly and ensuring that only free-range eggs are used, placing animal welfare at the forefront.
The culinary concept of the Grand Restaurant is designed to support local businesses, reduce emissions by shortening delivery routes and strengthen the regional economy of the High Tatras. We take pride in offering our guests the finest regional products from trusted local producers and suppliers.
Beyond supporting local businesses, we collaborate with hotel schools in the region. Students completing dual education at our hotel are offered employment contracts upon graduation. We also support local talent, transforming our lobby into a stage once a month for students of the Košice Conservatory to perform as part of the Kempinski Concertini project.
To support responsible linen use, bed linen is changed every two days by default. Guests who prefer daily linen changes can simply place the local artefact on the bed to indicate their preference.
Through our partnership with Clean the World, used amenity bottles and soap bars are collected and repurposed. This ensures our toiletries do not end up in landfills or incinerators.
We are proud to share Kempinski’s experience and practical steps in achieving sustainability. Our goal is to demonstrate the real value of certification – be it economic, marketing or guest satisfaction. As a hotel located within a national park, we also hope to inspire other hotels in Slovakia to take meaningful steps towards more sustainable operations. Together, we strive to minimise and continuously reduce our impact on the environment wherever possible.
