The Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz sets another first in its 30,000 sq m garden area by introducing a Maltese Indigenous Garden, thus combining landscaping and information for the thousands of guests coming to the hotel every year.

We are featuring Gozitan and Maltese natural heritage in this new part of our outside area giving home to plant species unique to the Maltese Islands. Among others the collection includes Darniella Melitensis – the Maltese Salt-tree (Maltese: Siġra tal-Irmied or Xebb) which is an endemic species found solely on the Maltese Islands and in fact it is the only Darniella species in Europe.

One can find the Myrtus Communis or Common Myrtle (Maltese: Riħan) which was once considered to be an emblem of honor. This tree is native and widespread in the Mediterranean but on our Islands unfortunately very rarely found in the wild. Or to mention the Capparis Orientalis – the Spineless Caper (Maltese: Il-Kappara). The immature flower buds of this bush, known as capers, have been used in the Maltese cuisine for centuries. Its vegetation cover for example,
protects soil from water loss and can protect against erosion.

These are just a couple of species we invite you to discover and see growing here at the New Indigenous Garden, contributing to preserve and highlight the natural heritage and locality at the Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz.
