Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz brings innovation as an eco hotel
A private investment by Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz, Gozo, has made this reputable hotel as the first hotel worldwide to stop using chlorine to treat tap water. This is due to the introduction of a new process that uses an ecological product which improves the quality of drinking water, which has been integrated into the Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz’s water treatment system.
The product, EcoClearProx®, was developed by a Belgian company, ABT Belgium Ltd. that strives for green solutions in disinfection of spaces, rooms, in process water and in drinking water. Today EcoClearProx® is the only disinfectant, based on hydrogen peroxide, recognized and authorized by the EU for use in drinking water. This is another eco-friendly initiative undertaken by this Gozitan leading hotel, in its endeavours to promote eco-friendly and sustainable tourism. Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz is the first Eco-certified hotel in Gozo.
EcoClearProx® has also been introduced for disinfection of the rooms and public spaces. Such product has been recognized and approved to be used against bacteria or viruses among them the H1N1, H5N1, Legionella, listeria, and MRSA. Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz was recently awarded for the third consecutive year as Malta’s Leading Spa Resort and as well for the second time in a row the Mediterranean’s Leading Spa Resort by the World Travel awards, the ‘Oscars’ of the travel industry.
The Hon. Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo announced the introduction of this new ecological product, EcoClearProx®, which is now being used to upgrade the drinking water quality at this hotel. The Minister remarked that the environment friendly and health safety features of this product are also in line with the Eco-Gozo vision that that amongst its objectives is also aiming to improve the drinking water quality in Gozo. Whilst praising the achievements of the Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz with regards to their being assigned eco-certification by MTA she also stressed the importance of the input by the private enterprise in conjunction with Government’s plan to make Gozo an eco-island. ‘A joint effort will ensure that this objective is transformed from vision to reality for the benefit of the island of Gozo as well as that of our country’, concluded Minister Debono.
EcoClearProx® is the only hydrogen peroxide authorized by the EU to be used in drinking water. It is 100% biodegradeable and is stabilised with a food grade. Other peroxides are mostly stabilised with peracetic acid and silver nitrates. Like chlorine EcoClear Prox is able to kill bacteria but as an added value it is the only biodegradeable product, it is odourless, has no influence on the taste and leaves no residue. Due to the fact that it is a very strong oxidizer you need less product with up to 15 times less EcoClearProx® than the existing disinfection products as chlorine when used as algae that can clog the pipes, and it has an additional benefit removing all bio film into the piping system.
