Glenfiddich Award for Bar Culture
Glenfiddich Award for Bar Culture awarded to the Karl May Bar at Grand Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski Dresden
Dresden, 10 April 2014: The Karl May Bar at Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski Dresden was honoured with the Glenfiddich Award for Bar Culture, one of the most coveted awards in the bar scene. The bar was also chosen Bar of the Year 2013. Every year, the Glenfiddich Award for Bar Culture is presented by an impartial jury evaluating each nominated venue according to six criteria – the type of bar, its concept, philosophy, consistency, service quality and offerings. "Besides having a high-class creativity when it comes to drinks, it was the consistency of the bar and the drinking culture lived there, contrasting pleasantly with the usually erratic bar scene that finally convinced us", stated the jury. The Karl May Bar differentiated itself from the other nominated nine bars and is thus the first bar in the eastern Laender to have won the award.
The classic interior and select atmosphere of the Karl May Bar, which features burgundy leather and dark oak, remind guests of metropolitan areas elsewhere in the world. Besides displaying exhibits from the Radebeul Karl May Museum, the bar also owns a complete collection of the first editions of Karl May books lining its panelled walls. According to Niko Pavlidis and his team, who have been in charge since 2004, “we think that high-class bar culture is timeless in character. We know what we are able to do and need not chase every new trend”. This is the mindset that has earned the Karl May Bar at Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski international recognition and makes the locals rarely surprised to find themselves at times among celebrities like Tom Hanks, Bill Murray or John Malkovich. "We are extremely pleased and proud of the Karl May Bar team because this award is not only evidence of the hospitality lived at Taschenbergpalais but also of the values represented by Kempinski Hotels", said Director Marten Schwass.
The annual “Glenfiddich Award for Bar Culture“, named after the widely recognised Single Malt Scotch Whisky, was introduced in 2004. Previous winners are: VOX Bar, Berlin (2004), Shepheard Bar, Cologne (2005), Biancalani Bar, Frankfurt (2006), Victoria Bar, Berlin (2007), Kamhea Suite, Frankfurt (2008), Capella Bar, Düsseldorf (2009), Lebensstern, Berlin (2010), JFK’s Bar, Frankfurt (2011) und Jimmy’s Bar im Hotel Hessischer Hof, Frankfurt (2012).
