Change is in the air at the Brandenburg Gate

Berlin, 7 February 2017. Change at the top of Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin. Matthias Al-Amiry today takes over the management of the five-star hotel at Brandenburg Gate. He succeeds Emile Bootsma, who has held the reins there since September 2014. Bootsma, who successfully oversaw the redesign of the lobby and public areas last year and so heralded the start of the hotel’s anniversary year, is leaving the hotel for personal reasons and at his own request. He will remain associated with Kempinski Hotels, initially on a project basis.

With Matthias Al-Amiry, Kempinski has brought on board an extremely experienced hotelier. Matthias was born in Mannheim and most recently held the position of Vice President Hotel Operations, responsible for the development and pre-opening phase of the hotel project MGM Cotai, Macau, with 1,500 guestrooms. He can look back on an impressive career in the international luxury hotel sector. For example, he demonstrated his leadership skills as General Manager from 2007 to 2014 in such renowned top hotels as "Raffles Beijing Hotel" and "Al Faisaliah Hotel" in Riyadh – a Rosewood Hotel – and as Resident Manager at the "The Peninsula Manila". Al-Amiry completed his training as a hotel manager at "Holiday Inn City Center" in Mannheim from 1986 to 1989. The ambitious German then quickly climbed the ladder of success. Following appointments at "Dolder Grand Hotel", Zurich and at "Nassauer Hof", Wiesbaden, he then moved to the USA for the next two years to "The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company" where he rose from F&B management trainee to Restaurant Manager and then to Director of Banquets at the hotels in Boston, Washington and Cleveland. He first held the position of Director of Food and Beverage in 1999 at Steigenberger "Frankfurter Hof" in Frankfurt am Main. From there, he decided to move to "Vier Jahreszeiten", Hamburg, then owned by Raffles in 2001, where he also took over the function of F&B Team Leader Europe.

"I am very much looking forward to my new role as Managing Director of Hotel Adlon Kempinski," said Matthias Al-Amiry. "My first concern is to get to know the hotel, its procedures and especially its staff and to settle in as quickly as possible. I am not only taking over a strong team and a successfully run and famous hotel, I am returning to Germany after several years abroad and, what’s more, to probably the most exciting city in the country. Berlin has an incredible amount to offer both historically and culturally."

The 51-year-old is a graduate of the famous Heidelberg Hotel Management School and alumnus of the private Cornell University in the USA, where he took further education courses in Hotel Revenue Management, Leadership, Motivation and Asset Management. Matthias is not only a cosmopolitan professionally; his family background is also very international. The son of an Iraqi father and a German mother is married to a Spanish-Philippine artist and is a father of two children. He devotes his free time to his family but also to sports and art.
