Celebrate the Majesty of Spanish Food and Wine in Estepona

Celebrate the Majesty of Spanish Food and Wine in Estepona

If you love Spanish cuisine, don’t miss the Estepona Ham Festival from the 10th to the 15th of August. Called the IV Certamen Mundial de Jamón Popi Ciudad de Estepona and organised by champion ham carver Popi, this is a celebration of one of the best Spanish products, showcasing the breeders, producers and skilled carvers over five days.

Around 60 producers of jamon exhibit their wares and stalls stretch 1.5 kilometres along the seafront. You can buy a plate of ham for 5€ and try the many varieties of this amazing product, all washed down with some local wine, or beer from the bars which also line the seafront promenade. The atmosphere is fantastic and it runs from 8pm to 2am, accompanied by some excellent concerts and live music.

The pretty, charming and traditional Spanish town of Estepona is a foodie’s paradise, with around 350 bars and restaurants. The gastronomic centre is a pedestrianised street called Calle Real, where you can find everything from traditional tapas, to more modern tapas creations, Italian, French and Asian cuisine too. The atmosphere is great, as you can stroll along, having a drink, choosing a restaurant, then move on to an ice cream shop for desert, all without having to worry about cars. Calle Real ends at a pretty square with a fountain, and there are many other great restaurants on either side of this road for you to choose from, so have an explore and see what kind of food you fancy.

The 5* Kempinski Hotel Bahia is the perfect base for gastro tourists, with its four restaurants, a lounge and a pool bar, where you can enjoy anything from a snack or afternoon tea, to steaks, seafood and innovative gastronomy. Highlights include their beachfront restaurant La Cabaña del Mar serving Spanish cuisine in a stunning setting and a Wine & Steak House showcasing the highest quality cuts of Spanish meats and a wine list with over 450 wines. Tapas lovers must try La Cocina de Mi Abuela, where each dish put forward by their talented chefs represents their favourite recipe from their Grandmother’s kitchen, which inspired them to become a Chef. There are over 100 dishes, which change regularly, and you can either just have a snack, get a selection of best-selling dishes, or a tapas feast paired with wines.

To make the most of all these great restaurants, choose the Dine Around Package, where guests can choose to have a special chef’s choice menu each day, or use their allowance in the evening in any of the restaurants as well as receive a discount on room rate.

The hotel also has its own wine “Orgulloso” (Proud) which is made especially for them and bottled by the Bodega Joaquin Fernandez, in Ronda. It is a wine created from a combination of Syrah and Merlot grapes, grown in the Sierra of Ronda at Finca Los Frutales following organic principles. The wine is aged for 12 months in oak barrels and is full bodied, with aromas of sweet and ripe tannins with red berry and a subtle woody background notes from the aging process. Guests who are interested in the wine can visit the vineyard in Ronda and see the production process. They can then have a wine pairing menu in the Alminar Steak and Wine House, or the tapas restaurant La Cocina de Mi Abuela.
