The Christmas Salon

Some of the loveliest festive moments begin with an invitation to meet for tea. Friends find time for conversations that December has kept postponing, while grandparents arrive with children already looking out for Santa. At 1897 Lounge, The Christmas Salon and The Little Christmas Club bring these gatherings together around one table, with an afternoon tea created for adults and a festive experience of their own for children aged six to twelve. 

The name The Christmas Salon evokes an afternoon of conversation, music and good company. The Little Christmas Club gives younger guests a place in that story, with treats chosen especially for them. Families can share the occasion without asking children to follow an adult menu or leaving adults to hurry through theirs. Whether the visit is a long-awaited reunion, a Christmas outing or a spontaneous pause during the holidays, everyone can enjoy the same setting in their own way.

 

A Festive Table to Share

For adults, the afternoon begins with savoury bites that bring a sense of occasion to the first cup of tea. Butter-poached lobster with lemon crème fraîche and caviar on brioche offers a luxurious opening. Wild crab with Hass avocado, yuzu and dill follows with a lighter touch, while smoked duck breast with fig and dark rye brings a deeper seasonal flavour. These are dishes that invite the happy exchange that comes when someone discovers a new favourite and recommends it across the table.
Then come the sweets. A reindeer chestnut choux lends a playful Christmas note, while chocolate mousse and pistachio praline bûche de Noël offers something rich to linger over. Plain and cranberry scones are served with raspberry jam, passion fruit curd and Devonshire clotted cream, alongside Dresden stollen. From the festive trolley, guests may discover Christmas cookies, fruit cake, mince pies or marrons glacés. The selection can change from day to day, bringing a little surprise to each return visit. Unlimited tea and coffee leave plenty of time to enjoy another cup and perhaps one more taste.

The children’s tea has its own pleasures to discover. A ham and cheese waffle sandwich and smoked salmon with avocado and ikura make the savoury selection feel like an occasion, while a Christmas blueberry cupcake, apple raisin pie and reindeer chestnut choux bring joy to the sweet course. Scones with jam, passion fruit curd and clotted cream, together with Dresden stollen, give children a taste of traditions they can share with the adults. Hot chocolate or fresh juice completes their afternoon tea.

The two menus make room for different appetites and ages, while the pleasure of sharing remains the same.
