Explore the winding alleys and streets which lead to Coptic churches at every corner and three mosques. Visitors should visit the Al-Azhar Mosque in particular, home to the oldest university in the world. 

There are also three museums within its walls. The Egyptian Military Museum displays a huge range of items related to military history. Al-Gawhara Palace Museum is an elegant building commissioned by Muhammad Ali Pasha, and full of beautiful rooms, and the Carriage Museum has a unique collection of royal carriages.
