Five Years Kempinski Palace Engelberg: Celebrating Five Years of the Award-Winning Grand Hotel – A Belle Époque Icon

Kempinski Palace Engelberg - Exterior

Engelberg, 9 June 2026 – This summer marks a milestone as Kempinski Palace Engelberg celebrates its fifth anniversary on 25 June 2026. Since reopening in the summer of 2021, the only five-star superior property at the foot of Mount Titlis has grown into a landmark for the region. What began as an opening in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic has become a success story built on genuine hospitality, with a dedicated team, loyal guests and strong local roots. The anniversary is both a moment of gratitude and the launch of a season of festive highlights.

A Look Back: A Second Home for Guests and Employees
‘It is a special privilege to have become a second home for so many of our guests,’ says General Manager Andreas Magnus. Twenty employees from the opening team remain with the hotel to this day. Together they define the distinctive spirit of the house, one shaped by solidarity, authenticity and passion. The hotel also holds a cherished place within the wider region. Talmann (valley mayor) Mike Bacher notes: ‘The hotel is of central importance to our valley. It strengthens our profile and allows Engelberg to position itself in the premium segment once again.’ Nicole Reisinger, Managing Director of Engelberg-Titlis Tourism, adds: ‘The hotel fills a gap in the five-star segment and meaningfully boosts regional economic value.’ Abbot Christian Meyer of Engelberg Monastery reflects on the relationship: ‘For tradition and modern hotel management to remain in harmony over the long term, an understanding of history is essential, and this is achieved here in a remarkable way.’

A Toast to Five Years
The anniversary is a moment to say thank you to all guests, employees, partners and suppliers. A special highlight of the opening year was the collaboration with Aargau winery Besserstein, which produced an exclusive Blanc de Noir Millésime 2021 made from Pinot Noir grapes. This wine was bottled in a limited edition of 200 magnums, with the first 50 bottles now being opened to mark the fifth anniversary. ‘We have achieved a great deal in these five years, but we are not yet at our destination. We look forward to continuing the journey,’ says Andreas Magnus. For Magnus, the defining quality of Kempinski Palace Engelberg lies not in its classification as a five-star superior hotel, but in its attitude, rooted in genuine hospitality and the long history of the monastery and the surrounding places of significance. He describes it as a place for reflection and mental wellbeing. ‘Engelberg possesses a rare sense of peace, clarity and safety,’ he adds. ‘Whether it is the mountains that protect us or the simple fact that the road ends here, the effect is undeniable.’ This sense of place reflects the essence of Quiet Luxury, defined by its effortless, profound and unique character.

About Kempinski Palace Engelberg: Situated in the heart of the Swiss Alps, close to Lucerne, Kempinski Palace Engelberg (www.kempinski.com/engelberg) reopened in June 2021 following more than five years of construction. The historic Belle Époque landmark has been reinterpreted for a new generation, combining heritage, nature and contemporary luxury. As the first and only international five-star superior hotel in Central Switzerland’s largest winter and summer destination, Kempinski Palace Engelberg is a year-round alpine retreat. More than a century ago, the historic building gained recognition beyond Switzerland when successful Engelberg hotelier Eduard Cattani (1841–1908) commissioned his brother, Architect Arnold Cattani (1846–1921), to design the original structure. Opened in 1904 as the Grandhotel Winterhaus, it laid the foundation for today’s property. Following extensive renovation and the integration of a new five-story extension, the hotel now forms a unified architectural ensemble. Its 129 rooms and suites feature state-of-the-art amenities and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Culinary experiences include Cattani Restaurant, The Palace Bar with the Habanos Cigar Lounge, the Wintergarden, and in winter the Chalet Ruinart. The property also features an 880 sq m rooftop spa with an infinity pool and panoramic views, a Kids Club and a modern event area with nine rooms plus the historic Kursaal for up to 1,000 guests. The hotel is accessible year-round by car, train or within approximately 75 minutes from Zurich Airport.
In 2025, Kempinski Palace Engelberg was awarded One MICHELIN Key – ‘A Special Stay’ – by the MICHELIN Guide.
