Chamber Music Festival

in Engelberg

Fitting with this year’s comprehensive theme, we are honored to be joined by one of the most comprehensive musicians of our time: Sir András Schiff. The audience can look forward to a solo piano recital, as well as highlights such as Schumann's Piano Quintet and Schubert’s Trout Quintet performed together with the Merel Quartet.

Hot news, Miscellaneous

We are particularly excited to welcome back two guests who provided unforgettable interpretations in previous seasons: Yura Lee (violin/viola) and Marianna Shirinyan (piano). The piano duo Soós-Haag will join us for the first time with offerings of works by Schubert, Debussy, Dieter Ammann and Roland Moser.  Double bassist and narrator Christian Sutter will present a literary piano recital together with Sir András Schiff featuring readings from Lichtenberg and piano compositions of Joseph Haydn. The Merel Quartet also eagerly awaits Serbian cellist Xenia Jankovic, the first prize winner of the Cassado Competition and a sought-after soloist and chamber musician. In the Late Night Concert the baroque ensemble Amaconsort will transport us back to the origins of opera with ayres, tunes and dances from 16th-century England.

The program features various forms of innovation: early examples of the string quartet, including Haydn's very first string quartet, the first cello sonata (Beethoven) and the first piano quintet (Schumann). We include works of early sacred music and compositions with asian influences or strong ties to folk music, such as Schubert's "Divertissement à la hongroise". The last of the 10 concerts features works with their origins in the "Dumka," those melancholy meditations of slavic folk music so beloved of Dvorák.
