Meaningful and Sustainable CSR

21 April 2023, Shanghai – Grand Kempinski Hotel Shanghai contributed towards climate change adaption efforts by taking part in wolfberry tree planting, supporting the environmental protection and rehabilitation in Ningxia.

Grand Kempinski Hotel Shanghai has joined hands with the China Green Foundation’s “Happy Home” to jointly launch the planting project “Happy Home”. By planting economic forests in a suitable place and with suitable trees, Grand Kempinski Hotel Shanghai will continue to help ecological protection and rural revitalisation and improve the living standards of farmers. The public welfare donation from the hotel to the China Greening Foundation will be used for the public welfare project of the China Green Foundation in Zhongning County, Zhongwei City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, and “Happy Home – Planting a Tree of Hope”. Each donated tree will be planted on the desert land in the west by the recipient farmers, so as to continuously improve desertification and resist the invasion of sand and dust, and also give farmers hope.

Trees in cities provide countless benefits for local communities – from reducing urban heat, to increasing access to urban green spaces, to protecting clean air and water, and much more. 
On 11 April 2023, two of the hotel staff went to Ningxia Zhongwei City on behalf of the hotel. The blessing of rain arrived the day before, with the rain clearing up on the day of planting and returning once the planting of 300 wolfberry trees was completed. The land had already been prepared by the local forest guards, and local planting experts and the management team for the Qixin planting company helped plant for us. It was obvious that everyone enjoyed getting their hands dirty while planting and giving back to the Earth’s bounty.

The unique fact about the programme is that it became Grand Kempinski Hotel Shanghai’s CSR by China Green Foundation acting on their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) targets.

“Corporate Social Responsibility is a cornerstone of our operations, and we are delighted to be able to contribute to such a meaningful project. The tree planting is just one of many projects we support, and this year we plan to triple last year’s efforts and plant close to 1,000 trees. This project excites us as it contributes to a better environment and helps better the economy,” said Hotel General Manager Mr Kirk.
