Route for Lovers of Traditions and Folklore

Travelling from Budapest to the High Tatras

Trip Overview

Note: All prices are provided as a guide only and were correct as of May 2026.

Stop 1: Banská Štiavnica – The Silver Town (UNESCO)

Leaving Budapest, head north across the border at Šahy. Your first major stop is one of the most beautiful historic towns in Europe.

  • The town is built into the walls of an ancient caldera and is known for its ‘tajchy’ (artificial mining reservoirs) and steep, winding streets.
  • Don’t miss The Open-Air Mining Museum, where you’ll be given a yellow coat and a helmet to explore the depths of the Bartolomej shaft.
  • Stop for coffee or lunch at Divná Pani https://divnapani.sk/en/ , a quirky, antique-filled café that feels as though you are stepping back into the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Parking in Banská Štiavnica can be challenging due to the steep caldera layout.

  • Best Parking: Use P2 (Mládežnícka Street) or P3 (Dolná Street). Both lots are located about a 5–10 minute walk from the centre.
  • Parking fee: Typically the first hour is free, then EUR 2.00/hour (max EUR 10/day).
  • Mining Museum parking: If you go directly to the Open-Air Mining Museum (on the outskirts), there is a dedicated lot costing roughly EUR 5.00 for 2 hours.
  • Download the ParkDots app. It works in Banská Štiavnica and allows you to pay via card/mobile, which is easier.

Stop 2: Vlkolínec – The Village Where Time Stopped (Living Village)

Continuing north towards the Low Tatras, you arrive at Vlkolínec, a UNESCO World Heritage site located on a hillside near Ružomberok.

  • This is not a museum but a living village with around 45 original wooden houses, stone foundations and colourful lime-wash walls.
  • Look for the wooden bell tower (built in 1770) and the traditional well. The scent of wood smoke and the silence of the mountains create an authentic sense of village life.

Since this is a mountainside village, parking is strictly regulated to keep cars out of the historic zone.

  • Best Parking: There is a designated parking lot at the bottom of the hill before you enter the village area.
  • Parking fee: A flat rate of approximately EUR 5.00 per day
  • In late July, this lot can fill up by midday, so arrival before 1:00pm is recommended. The walk from the parking lot to the village is uphill, so wear comfortable shoes. Entry to the village is usually around EUR 4.00, which often includes access to the museum houses.

Stop 3: Museum of the Liptov Village – The Heart of Folk Architecture (Pribylina)

As you approach the High Tatras, take a short detour to Pribylina.

  • This open-air museum preserves buildings relocated from villages flooded during the construction of the Liptovská Mara dam.
  • It features a Gothic-Renaissance manor house and a wooden church. Unlike Vlkolínec, which is a real village, this is a curated site where you can explore interiors, crafts, tools and the social hierarchy of traditional Slovak life.

This site is very spacious and easy to navigate by car.

  • Best Parking: Directly at the entrance to the museum. It is large and easy to find.
  • Fees: Parking is often included in the entry ticket (approx. EUR 10.00 for adults) or charged separately at around  EUR 2.00.
  • Important: Check for ‘living history’ demonstrations. In summer, they often have craftspeople showing traditional weaving or blacksmithing.

Final Destination: Grand Hotel Kempinski High Tatras – Luxury in The Clouds

As you finish your folklore tour, you continue into the High Tatras to Štrbské Pleso.

  • The Grand Hotel Kempinski is a landmark in its own right. After a day of exploring rustic wooden houses, its turn-of-the-century alpine luxury offers a striking contrast.
  • Take a walk around Štrbské pleso (a glacial lake, 2.5 km, about a 45-minute leisurely walk) just outside the hotel. The air is famously pure, and the mountain reflections in the water create a perfect ‘end credits’ moment for your journey.

Essential Logistics

1. Highway Vignettes (Crucial)

You will need two separate digital vignettes. You can buy them online in advance:

  • Hungary: ‘e-Matrica’ (Purchase at ematrica.nemzetiutdij.hu)
  • Slovakia: ‘e-znamka’ (Purchase at eznamka.sk)
  • Please note: Cameras on the highways automatically scan number plates, and fines are hefty if you are not registered.

2. Weather & Gear

  • The Mine: Even if it’s 30 °C in Budapest, the Banská Štiavnica mine is a constant 8 °C to 10 °C. The museum provides overcoats, but be sure to wear closed-toe shoes.
  • The Tatras sun is much stronger than in the lowlands, so bring sunscreen for your walk through Vlkolínec.

3. Driving Time Reality

While the driving time is approximately 4.5 hours, with three stops and lunch, this itinerary is closer to a full 10-hour day.

If you leave Budapest at 8:00am, you should arrive at Grand Hotel Kempinski around 6:00pm – just in time for a sunset drink overlooking Štrbské Pleso.

Location Estimated Fee What it Includes
Slovak Mining Museum (Banská Štiavnica) EUR 14.00 Full guided underground tour (approx. 90 mins), helmet and coat rental
Vlkolínec (UNESCO Village) EUR 8.00 Access to interior museum houses (The Farmer's House). Walking through the village streets is free.

4. Crucial Tips for These Locations

The Mining Museum (Banská Štiavnica)
  • Book Ahead: During Summer, we strongly recommend booking your time slot at least 2–3 days in advance via the website (muzeumbs.sk).
  • Language: Most tours are in Slovak. Ask for an English audio guide or a printed translation sheet at the ticket office – they are usually very helpful.

Vlkolínec:
  • While larger museums take cards, the small souvenir stalls or local honey vendors in Vlkolínec often prefer cash (euros).
  • Entrance to the specific ‘UNESCO House’ and the ‘Granary’ is often free of charge once you are in the village.

Pribylina (Museum of Liptov Village)
  • Photography Fee: Be aware that some Slovak museums charge a small extra fee (usually EUR 1.00–EUR 2.00) if you want to take professional photos or videos inside the buildings.
