“I am very glad that the education and hands on experience I have acquired has helped me to be the best sommelier in Lithuania two years in a row. The other contestants are all experienced and well known experts in this field, so I am very honoured to have won. There are some really strong restaurants in Lithuania, which foster excellent sommelier traditions and allow experts to improve their knowledge and develop their skills. This undoubtedly helps to elevate the consumption culture of wine and other alcoholic drinks in Lithuania”, says Mr Miežys, the Duval – Leroy Grand Prix Champion.

During the Grand Prix Sommelier Championship of Lithuania, the main focus was put on Champagne. The finalists had to decant a bottle of Champagne Duval Leroy Brut properly for the guests. This assignment was especially difficult as, according to the experts of this field, the standards of Champagne decanting are not clearly set out. This was the first time this kind of assignment was given in an international competition, which means the finalists had to create a method on their own to decant the Champagne properly.During the final, participants also had to carry out classical assignments, such as amending incorrect wine menus, pairing wines and other alcoholic beverages with food, carrying out blind degustations of spirits and wines and tasting the local herring dish and choosing the most suitable wine for it.

Mr Miežys says that to become the champion of Lithuania for the second time was in large part thanks to the experience he picks up through his daily work. Currently, Mr Miežys is a sommelier at Kempinski Hotel Cathedral Square’s restaurant, Telegrafas. He continues to learn and expand his skills, not only in Lithuania but also on appointments abroad at other Kempinski properties. According to the General Manager of the hotel, Noel Attard, the achievement of Mr Miežys is a true honour for the whole hotel.

It seems only natural that this tradition has been maintained and is a major part of today’s Kempinski culture. We are proud to have within our team Narimantas, a true wine lover, who has once more been named the best sommelier in Lithuania. During this competition, he had to showcase his passion for wine and his outstanding skills in front of an authoritative jury. I feel that a proper wine culture is critical to any strong culinary culture, as there is no enjoyment of an excellent meal without being accompanied by a good selection of wines. Narimantas is today running our restaurant, Telegrafas, where he has succeeded in creating a wine journey for our clients by providing an excellent selection of wines, champagnes and spirits and, through his knowledge and expertise, ensuring that our guests have the best possible match to their meal”, says Noel Attard.

In September, Mr Miežys will represent Lithuania in the European Championship in Monaco and San Rem.
