The Wiener Festwochen (Vienna Festival) is a festival for high, sub and countercultures that takes place every spring. The festival shows theatre, opera and dance productions from all over the world and also acts as a producer of international productions.
During five to six weeks in May and June, every year the Wiener Festwochen is particularly concerned to create or co-design cultural events that combine the highest artistic level with socially relevant content and goals. In the area of tension between tradition and modernity, the programme shows productions in all genres: operas, concerts, theatre, performances, installations, readings, films. In addition to new productions of esteemed classics and premieres of contemporary pieces, international directors, artists and ensembles from around the world present celebrated works, often in their original language. The programme offers an average of 40 productions with 175 performances and 70 concerts. Each year around 180,000 people attend the events of the Wiener Festwochen.
