St Petersburg, the northern, imperial or cultural capital of Russia with its 44 islands and 300 bridges, is located in the north-west of the country on the Neva River delta, where it connects the Finland Gulf to the Baltic Sea. This second biggest city in Russia combines the world’s cultural heritage and contemporary art with modern restaurants and shopping trends, and the famous White Nights Festival.
With its population of 5 million in 2012, the city is multireligious, though Russian Orthodoxy is the official religion. The main language is Russian. Russians all are highly educated in general, while citizens of St Petersburg are symbols of intelligence and high-style manners. When they visit restaurants and theatres, they are usually dressed up, and they follow an elegant smart-casual style in everyday life.
St Petersburg is classified as Dfb, having a humid continental climate. The time zone is GMT/UTC + 3. The currency is the rouble (RUB).
