Art & Culture

Local Information

The Engadin Valley has long been a favourite of leading names in art and culture. Nietzche, Rilke, Wagner and so many more have been charmed by St Moritz at one time or another, a legacy that continues to this day.

A place of such beauty, recuperation, recovery and inspiration abounds in the valley alongside sporting challenges. A cultural epicentre of the region thanks to the meeting of Romansh, Italian, Swiss and German heritage, St Moritz is home to a number of small but incredibly select galleries and museums, showcasing stunning work from Switzerland and beyond.

Traditional sleigh rides, chamber orchestras, art events and UNESCO World Heritage sites have firmly established St Mortiz's worldwide cultural reputation. Even a local multi-storey car park has been turned in to a striking design gallery, showcasing striking posters in a range of contemporary and traditional styles.

Galleries for all tastes and museums that delve deep in to the valley's cultural heritage abound, and plenty of quirky local architecture that combines tradition with progressive styles provides St Moritz with a beautiful character. Many houses feature eye-catching "graffiti", a local style of decorative artwork – everywhere you look, there are beautiful examples of art and culture.

Throughout the year, the valley plays host to various festivals, such as the Schlitteda Festival of Youth, or Chalandamarz – a festival to banish winter. A truly remarkable place, St Moritz bursts at the seams with unbelievable oddities you won't find anywhere else in the world.
