One of the most recognisable structures in Oman, Al Alam Palace is an absolute must-visit for any traveller. Al Alam is the palace of Sultan Qaboos, located deep in Old Muscat, and has gradually been built over the past two centuries.
Today’s façade dates back to 1972, and is a beautiful example of modern Islamic architecture. With its beautiful use of vibrant colours and curvaceous form, the structure really is unlike any other in the world, and the lush gardens that surround it and the picture-perfect boulevard that leads up to it make it one of Muscat’s most admirable locations.
The Al Alam Palace is bordered by Al Jalali and Al Mirani fortresses, each built in the 16th century to protect the Oman from invasion – the proximity of the three to one another make for an exciting and interesting day out.
