Early Morning Game Drive

It’s not your usual Monday morning in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy. No sight of high- rise buildings parked adjacent to each other, or crowds of people dashing past one another to get to the office on time. No sounds of cars hooting, or engines running as the vehicles wait for the signal to turn green.

It’s 6:40 am and the crescent- shape moon can still be seen as the Landcruiser sets into motion for the start of a morning in the jewel of Kenya, the Olare Motorogi Conservancy in Masai Mara. Shades of baby pink begin to creep in to the morning sky, and all you can see are plains and plains of open grassland with dots of thorn trees scattered in every direction.

The Sundowner Experience at Olare Mara Kempinski Masai Mara

The ‘sundowner’ is a safari tradition. At first, you might question the wisdom of tearing off into the bush to sit under a tree and watch the sun go down – with a drink in your hand – when there is a perfectly delightful bar at the Olare Mara Kempinski – but once you’ve tried it there’s no looking back.

Ideally you set off around four o’clock with the safari vehicle suitably equipped with folding chairs and a cold box. At first you may meander along the river and visit the deep brown muddy pool where the hippos wallow, chortle and blow. Then you might set off in pursuit of the ‘local’ lion pride, which is normally to be found staked out in the long grass where the zebras come down to drink ...

Lion Hunt

It’s late afternoon and the heat has gone out of the day. Tea has been served and the safari vehicles are beginning to drift out into the wilderness for the early-evening game drives. Experiences have been exchanged amongst the guests as to who has seen what. Some have ticked off all the members of the ‘big five’ – lion, rhino, buffalo, leopard and elephant. Some have only just begun. We fall into the latter category and we’re particularly keen on seeing a lion. But, since big beasts can’t exactly be ordered off the safari menu, we’ll be happy with whatever we see.

It’s an open-sided vehicle with a wrap-around panorama that extends all the way to the blue-grey shoulder of the Oloololo ...
