Unsung Slopes: The Unlikely Skiing Destinations

Ski season is here, and across the globe, people are heading to the slopes for a lot of fun, with a bit of relaxation added in there for good measure. Our continents are blessed with some incredible mountains that are just waiting to be discovered, but after the French and Austrian Alps, and the Rockies, where else in the world will you find top skiing conditions?

Here, we take a look at some of the lesser-known skiing destinations - perhaps they will inspire you for next season.

Germany is often the first place people think of when planning a city break around Christmas time, but the neighbouring countries of France and Austria are usually the chosen destinations for ski holidays.

The Bavarian Alps is not exactly an unlikely skiing destination, but as we all know the French and Austrian Alps, so it is only right that we discover more about the Bavarian side of the mountain range. From tobogganing to skiing and snowboarding, with over 60 kilometres of pistes to speed down, there is plenty on offer in Bavaria this winter!

Offering smaller options when it comes to ski resorts, Japan is home to several resorts and slopes for avid winter sports fans to enjoy. Fukui, a perfectly rural but beautiful spot, is home to the majority of these resorts, and you will find a range of runs that are perfect for families and groups of friends alike.

Smaller resorts like the ones you will find in Fukui might be quite basic, but what the area lacks in luxury, it certainly makes up for with its unique Japanese take on snow sports - for instance, many of the runs are floodlit so you can keep on skiing late into the night!

It is the future home of the 2022 Winter Olympics, but Beijing is not the first place that is thought of when it comes to skiing. However, having won the bid to host the winter sports tournament, Beijing has taken on the role seriously - and you can already see development in the city's winter sport facilities.

Today, you can head to Zhangjiakou, Shijinglong or Nanshan for a wide range of activities and pistes, most of which are just a short distance away from Beijing.

When you think of Dubai, the words 'sun', 'sand' and 'desert' all spring to mind - but you might be surprised to learn that Dubai (or more specifically, The Mall of the Emirates) is home to a colossal indoor ski resort, Ski Dubai.

Within the centre, you will find tube slides, slopes and jumps to test your ability whether you are a proficient skier or just starting out.
