Travel apps to make the most of your holiday

No matter where in the world you are travelling to for your holiday, if it is not the country you are from, geography, currency and other basic day-to-day knowledge can feel suddenly removed, even if you felt prepared before you went.

Thankfully, in this day and age, around 80% of all online adults own a smartphone, and once you have got the device, you are just a few clicks away from accessing some of the most helpful technology around - travel apps.

Designed to be used wherever you are in the world, travel-focused apps encompass everything from currency exchange calculators to GPS maps - but it is this wide scope that has saturated the travel app market. Once you have decided what would be helpful, it is a challenge to decipher which is the best of the bunch! Here, we have highlighted some of our favourite travel apps - you never know which will come handy on your next trip. Happy travelling!

Are you a serial over packer, or have a bad habit of assuming you know what the weather is going to be like, only to be very mistaken when you arrive? If so, PackPoint might be a great help to you. Simply tell the app where you are going, how long for, and it will create a custom packing list for you! It takes duration, type of trip and weather into account, taking all the effort out of the decision making process when it comes to packing those suitcases. PackPoint is free to download, and is available on iOS and Android.

Google Translate

As well as being as handy as ever when it comes to figuring out what a menu is offering you, Google Translate has stepped it up a notch with a two-way automatic speech translation across 40 languages. Granted, it might disrupt your conversation a little bit, but there is a greater chance of both understanding and being understood in a cross-language conversation while using the app. You will find Google Translate on Android and iOS.

Of course, it can always help to arm yourself with a few key phrases before you go! Duolingo is the favourite free language learning app, and can get you up to speed with an easy to understand app interface in no time at all. Duolingo is free on Android and iOS.

XE Currency

It can be tough to get your head around exchange rates from country to country - especially when you are under pressure in a shop, or in a queue for an attraction. XE Currency not only works out the exchange rate for you, but uses real-time currency rates, so you know your currency conversion is the most accurate it can be. There are hundreds of paid-for apps out there that do this, but for simple holiday use, this brilliant freebie does everything you will need. Find it on both Android and iOS here.
