Europe in Autumn
Europe in Autumn

For many, autumn is a favourite amongst all the seasons. Although it does mark the decline into winter, there's something charming about the cool air that begins to tickle the nose, the turning of the leaves and all the slow-cooked, warming comfort foods that we begin to crave.

Often paired with dry weather, autumn can be a wonderful time to enjoy a city break. Here are some of our favourite European destinations that are perfect for exploring at this time of year.

Vienna, Austria
As the weather begins to cool a little (though generally still remains somewhere between 14 and 20°C), the crowds in this beautiful Austrian city begin to decrease, giving you much more space and freedom to explore the city for yourself.

Along with the Viennale Vienna International Film Festival and Vienna Fashion week, there are lots of events happening in the city during autumn, but by heading to the greener spaces in town, such as the Stadtpark, the Volksgarten, and the Sigmund Freud Park, you can experience a true Austrian autumn.

To warm yourself through after a day of exploring the chilly outdoors, choose a local favourite dish - freshly made Wiener Apfelstrudel. Served warm, with cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream, the dessert is a must-try. Pair with a Viennese coffee for a wonderful treat!

Stay at the Palais Hansen Kempinski on your next visit to Vienna.

Berlin, Germany
The bustling heart of Germany is famous for many things: art, architecture and history. But, when visiting in September or October, you could easily think that 'beautiful autumns' needs to be added to the list.

Parks and green spaces are plentiful in this vibrant capital. Tiergarten sits in the middle of the city, with the Reichstag located alongside. Come autumn, the park is a colourful wonderland, and a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding city. You will also find perfect autumnal walks along the Wuhle and through the Grunewald.

Along with stunning natural scenery, you will find autumn brings with it the incredible Berlin Art week (usually taking place during late September) and the Berlin Illumination Festival, where you will find artwork and animations projected onto some of the city's most impressive buildings!

Consider either the Hotel Adlon Kempinski or the Kempinski Hotel Bristol for your autumnal visit to Berlin.

Budapest, Hungary
Wonderful Budapest can be considered a 'walking city' year round, and during autumn, things only get more beautiful! Though the summer crowds decline from the end of August, the temperatures in Budapest will often remain close to 20°C until the end of October - perfect for exploring. Gellert Hill and Margaret Island are particularly popular spots for an autumn stroll.

Budapest

Even though the temperatures remain high during the day, things can turn a little cooler in the evenings, and that's where Budapest has a tasty secret - its food.

Along with the autumn Budapest Wine Festival and the Budapest Palinka and Sausage Festival, popular Hungarian dishes take over as the seasons change. Warm up your soul with some famous Goulash, and notice how Hungarian paprika appears on more and more dishes - an ideal contrast to the cold.

On your next visit to Hungary, why not stay at the Kempinski Hotel Corvinus?
