Top Five… European Christmas Markets

There are few things more traditional than a European Christmas market. Below, we have highlighted a few of our favourite destinations to visit this winter - specifically for their ability to hold a wonderful Christmas market! From local foods to handmade crafts and presents, a trip to one of these markets could mean your Christmas gifts are sorted in no time at all…

Hamburg, Germany

Germany certainly knows how to host a Christmas market. So much so that many European Christmas markets are, in fact, German exports themselves. Hamburg is a particularly festive place to visit if you are looking for some Christmas fun ahead of December.

The main square - Weihnachtsmarkt - that sits outside of the town hall is the centre of the market, and encompasses a beautiful Christmas tree, fairy lights and an array of wooden huts, in which you can sample German meats, mulled wine and pick up handmade presents for friends and family back home.

Visit the Hamburg Christmas market from 23rd November to 23rd December.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Year after year, people flock to the Danish capital to get a little taste of the festive season - but in Copenhagen, it is not really about the shopping for gifts and trinkets – it is about the experience and the festive surroundings of Tivoli Gardens!

Along with the chance to meet Julemanden (Father Christmas), you can enjoy sipping on some warming gløgg while watching the famous Tivoli light show over the lake. Of course, you can still stock up on some gifts while visiting - along with traditional festive treats, you will undoubtedly stumble across some brilliant pieces of incredible Danish design. Just be conscious that retail is not the main focus of the Danish Christmas market!

Visit the Tivoli Christmas market in Copenhagen from mid-November to late December. You will also find other markets in the city centre around this time, too - perfect for a long weekend trip.

Vienna, Austria

In a similar style to the Hamburg Christmas market, Austria's most sought-after festive affair takes places in front of the city hall on Rathausplatz. The Viennese Christmas market brings together a range of stalls serving up festive food and drink, and a dedicated children's area, where families can make Christmas biscuits and listen to the carols sung by the choir,

The market is open every day from 14th November to 24th December.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Visitors can look forward to a range of Christmas markets that are set to take place in Amsterdam this season. From modern fairs to Victorian-era markets, there is plenty to see and do in the Dutch capital.

In fact, the festivities are not just confined to Amsterdam. Head just outside of the city to Haarlem, and you will find the amazing Dickens Christmas market. With vintage crafts and a stunning setting, there are few better ways to spend a weekend - but be warned, this market is not around for the whole season, it is currently only confirmed for the weekend of 12th - 13th December.

Bath, UK

Nestled in the shadows of Bath Abbey, this magical Christmas market is a very traditional event. The Bath Christmas market brings local makers together to sell their crafts, meaning that a visit here offers something far more unique than a trip to the high street.

Not only is it very competitive to secure a space in the wooden huts sitting in the centre of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, it can get busy to visit too – it is best to visit in the early evening or first thing on the weekend. If you can stand the crowds, however, you will experience a wonderfully festive time in the heart of one of Europe's most beautiful cities.
