Leaders in Hospitality Awards 2016
April 20, Dubai – Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates was presented the award for Best Room Refurbishment at the Leaders in Hospitality Awards 2016, produced by Hotel News Middle East magazine, following the completion of a $100m refurbishment project.
The refurbishment, which began in 2012, updated guest rooms – as well as public areas – through design, technology, accessibility and function, to create a project that marries Arabian traditions with a winter wonderland, in the famous Kempinski Ski Chalets.
Other shortlisted nominees in the category included Desert Palm Per Aquum Dubai and Jumeirah Beach Hotel.
The awards took place at the new St. Regis Dubai on April 19 and were attended by hundreds of industry figures. 19 categories were awarded in total with other notable winners including Atlantis The Palm, Hilton Hotels and TIME Hotels.
Speaking at the event, Hotel News ME editor, Sophia Soltani, said: “We received hundreds of nominations and the standard of the competition was incredibly tough, which to us demonstrates the strength of the industry across the Middle East at the moment.
“In best practice terms the hotel room should be updated every five to seven years but with increasing competition from a new wave of hotels, more and more the established properties are looking to reimagine their guest rooms to create new and innovative spaces that will remain in the guest’s memory.
“To beat such stiff competition shows how highly regarded Kempinski Hotel Mall of The Emirates is across the industry and on behalf of everybody here at Hotel News Middle East magazine we extend our congratulations to the team.”
The awards were sponsored by Presenting Parter RIKAN General Trading; water sponsor HORECA; Category sponsors A. Ronai L.L.C, UPI International, 1765 Gemini and Churchill China, and Pulsar Foodstuff Trading. Further support came from Knowledge Partner the Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management, and supporting partner Compareit4me.com
The awards were judged independently by a panel of industry experts recruited by Hotel News ME magazine. The judges were:
Daniel During, principal and managing director, Thomas Klein International (TKI)
Rabih Feghali, director at Ròya International Hospitality and Leisure Consultants
Ali Manzoor, associate partner, Knight Frank
Rupprecht Queitsch CEO and founder, INHOCO Group
Marianne Saulwick, director of industry liaison at The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management
Filippo Sona, director, head of hotels, MENA region, Colliers International
The Leaders in Hospitality Awards also marked the launch of the first Hotel News ME Industry Leaders Survey, an annual review of the opinions of key hospitality managers across a number of important industry issues.
Commenting on the launch of the survey, Melanie Mingas, group editor, said: “The hospitality industry had an interesting year in 2015 with a record breaking pipeline witnessed across the region, in addition to changing guest profiles and a surge in airlift, thanks to the expansions of GCC airlines. The Industry Leaders Survey is designed to take a snapshot of the impact of these developments and see how businesses coped under these ever changing conditions.”
The results of the survey will be announced at the GM Leaders Conference, taking place on 16 May, 2016, at St. Regis Dubai. To register to attend the event or to find out more about the Hotel News ME Industry Leaders Survey, email HNMESocial@bncpublishing.net
The Leaders in Hospitality Awards will return in 2017, with details to be announced in Q1 2017.
