Kempinski Seychelles Resort certified for their sustainable tourism methods
Kempinski Seychelles Resort is one of the first hotels to be certified for their sustainable tourism methods.
Mahe, Seychelles, 21 September 2013: Kempinski Seychelles Resort was recently certified by the Seychelles Tourism Board to have successfully completed the sustainable tourism assessment. The resort was also recognized as one of the first hotels to qualify for the country’s Sustainable Tourism Label. The certificate was awarded at the Annual Tourism Ball and was presented by H.E Mr. Alain St. Ange, Minister of Tourism and Culture together with Ms. Sherin Naiken, Chief Executive Officer of the Tourism Board.
The resort’s total score was 68% above the certification requirements. Hotels with more than 51 rooms require a minimum score of 7 points per section to qualify. The sections evaluated the policy and procedure documentation, communication thereof to guests, employees as well as to stakeholders. The practice of correct and effective waste management along with the approach to water reuse and recycling options, were closely scrutinized for innovative ‘loose-the-box’ methods. Assessors reviewed the systems in place that are aimed at reducing the output of operations on the environment while conservation which goes beyond the norm, featured as the true essence and importance of sustainable tourism.
This certification is an important milestone for the resort and is the first step to an ongoing process. “Congratulations on being one of the first hotels in Seychelles to qualify for the Seychelles Sustainable Tourism Label. The time, attention and special efforts given by you and your team to achieve this, is truly appreciated,” was the email announcement received from Ms. Sinha Levkovic, the manager responsible for spearheading the program.
Tourism represents 70% of the Seychelles economy making the wellbeing of the nation heavily dependent on its success. Arrival statistics recorded more than 200,000 people for 2012 and with lush green mountainous sceneries, thunder-grey granite rock formations and sparkling crystal clear waters, it comes as no surprise the island is a sought after destination, to be treasured.
The Resort’s journey to preserve and protect the environment for future generations, started shortly after the opening in March 2012 with the implementation of the Kempinski Green Inspiration program. The brand’s global green initiative features action points which coincide with the SSTL criteria.
Resident Manager, Mr. Gaetano Petruzzella expressed his gratitude to all team members for their continued support and passion for the vision; “With our continued commitment and dedication towards greener operations, we are sure to reap the long term benefits as an enterprise, team and most importantly a community.”
