Natural Honey Luxury Hotel. 25/08/2014 Bees Of Kempinski Hotel Cathedral Square Produced First Natural Honey

The first natural raw honey harvested by the Kempinski Bee Suite has been examined at the National Public Health Surveillance Laboratory (NPHSL). The results proved that the resulting honey shows almost no sign of heavy metals, such as cadmium and lead, which both usually indicate the impurity of honey. The activity of diastase, which is the main factor to indicate the quality of honey, was noted as “very high quality”. The honey is mostly produced from the linden tree blossoms and clovers in the surrounding parks.

The quantity of honey harvested from the beehive exceeded expectations too. It was estimated to harvest 15-25 kg annually, however, it has been produced around 37 kg of honey by the end of the season. According to local expert Mr Algis Mikalopas, who has been in the beekeeping business for 24 years and supports the hotel team with his knowledge and expertise, approximately 100,000 bees are contained in the beehive.

A half-contained beehive with around 30,000 inhabitants was implemented in the beginning of summer. According to General manager Kees Heuveling, the idea to install a beehive and generate fresh honey for the hotel was inspired by the Kempinski corporate initiative‚ “Best Breakfast in Town”, which fostered the idea to upgrade the honey presentation on the breakfast buffet and strengthen the selection of healthy options on the menus. In addition, the delicious honey will be used by the hotel's culinary team for breakfast pastries and in some of the restaurant beverages or cocktails at the hotel’s Le Salon Bar and Lounge.

“As Kempinski Hotel Cathedral Square, since its opening, has been a food and beverage driven hotel, it is essential for us to add to the guest’s unique experience while offering healthy, yet original options, as well as foster local culture and traditions,” said Mr Heuveling. “We saw an opportunity to harvest our own honey by placing a hive on the rooftop, and we wanted to offer our guests all-natural and local honey. For the future we will see how it can be enhanced even further.”
