Çırağan Palace Kempinski İstanbul’s barista, Soner Özdemir, was selected as The Caffé Vergnano Best Barista 2013 at the third annual Caffè Vergnano Best Barista Competition held in Milan, Italy on 21 October 2013.
The contestants, whose names were shortlisted by local experts in participating countries, first competed at a national level in Greece, Turkey, Latvia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Slovakia, Bosnia, France and, of course, Italy – home to Caffè Vergnano. The winner of each country was invited to compete in Milan at the HOST tradeshow.
Nine contestants had 10 minutes to prepare four espressos, cappuccinos and espresso macchiatos, and as many takeaway cappuccinos as possible. A panel of four judges, including Damian Burgess, head trainer at Caffè Vergnano headquartered in Turin, Italy, evaluated the baristas based on their professionalism, organisation skills, cleanliness, coffee knowledge, speed, efficiency and style.
Contestants were trained by Erol Mark Houssein, managing partner of Mira Gıda, supplier of Caffè Vergnano coffee products, who also organised the semi-final at USLA International Hospitality Academy in Istanbul on 1 August 2013.
The Head Judge Burgess was most impressed by Özdemir’s style and cleanliness, who he has honed his skills working in the food and beverage industry for the past eight years at different hotels and restaurants in Turkey and England. Özdemir has been working as a barista and barman at Gazebo Lounge of the hotel for the past two years.
“I am extremely proud that Özdemir represented our hotel and brand at such an influential industry event. We share with all our hearts Kempinski’s goal to become better known as a food and beverage driven company, going back to its roots as restaurateurs when the company was founded in 1897. We will continue to innovate, train our staff and improve our food and beverage offerings to provide perfection,” said General Manager Ralph Radtke.
In 2014, the Caffè Vergnano Best Barista Competition will be held in Paris, France.
