Kempinski’s Geneva Suite: Superlative in Every Sense

Today, the Grand Hotel Kempinski Geneva unveils its Geneva Suite, the largest free-standing suite in Europe. The suite covers two floors and 11,690 square feet, the lower floor is dedicated to receiving and entertaining areas while the private quarters are on the upper floor. As its name suggests, the suite, situated on the top two floors of the hotel, enjoys an unrestricted view over Geneva city, the famous Jet d’Eau and the Mont-Blanc.

Two private lifts provide access to both floors and, in the suite, the floors are connected by a stunning spiral, flying staircase, which is an architectural masterpiece. On the lower floor, the marble hall opens onto a large living area, which occupies the suite’s southern corner. A huge, modern fireplace livens up this area. Two large seating areas are next to the dining table, which seats up to twelve guests. On one side of the living area, lie an office as well as a security room and the kitchen. On the other side, a private lounge adjoins the first of three master bedrooms.

The upper floor is devoted to the suite’s private quarters, with two master bedrooms, each with its en suite marble bathroom and walk-in closets. The private living room is divided into a lounge and a dining corner seating up to ten people. As on the floor below, the living room boasts its own fireplace. Recreational facilities, such as a billiard room, a gym and a steam bath are to be found on this floor.

Special attention has been given to security with bullet-proof windows throughout the Geneva suite. The security room acts as a screening centre for the suite, with security cameras at all entrance points to the suite.

The suite’s electronic equipment represents the latest in technology; the flat screen TVs swivel as the guest moves about, while adjusting screen luminosity according to the lighting conditions. The entertainment facilities are complemented by a Wii console.

The architecture and interior decoration of the Geneva Suite are the work of Tarek Hegazy, managing partner of A. B. Living Design, based in Sweden. As for the rest of the hotel, Lake Geneva is the main visual focus of the suite. Hegazy has achieved his aim of maximizing the views, by changing the structure of the space completely to bend it to his vision of what a royal suite ought to be. He also designed a deceptively simple-looking but technically highly complex spiral, flying staircase to link both floors of the suite, as well as a see-through, glass-encased fireplace on the upper floor.

Scenery lighting has been installed throughout the suite, with touch panels to remotely control the lighting, so that different moods and lighting levels can be created in each area of the suite according to the time of the day and usage of the area.

The designer’s colour palette varies from room to room. Beige, brown and grey-blue colours frame the views from the living area on the lower floor, whereas the master bedroom is decorated in darker, soothing tones. Gold lamé and cream egg shell dominate in the second bedroom, while sand, slate with a touch of darkish green are the theme in the third bedroom. The billiard-room remains very masculine, in dark brown, black and beige.

Noble materials have been used throughout and sometimes carried to extremes: marble and sandstone, rosewood and ebony, velvet and silk. A total of 160m² of hand-made silk carpets cover the living and dining area floors. Walls are covered in chamois leather, hand-made leather mosaics or pure silk. The furniture has been custom-made for the Geneva Suite, even the chairs are in non-standard dimensions, while accessories are either unique pieces or limited editions.

Kempinski Joins the Stop TB Partnership

Kempinski Hotels is delighted to support the Luis Figo Stop TB Campaign, in collaboration with the Stop TB Partnership, which aims to achieve a TB-free world. The campaign was launched today at Hackney Free & Parochial C of E School in London, with Luis Figo playing football with schoolchildren and Members of Parliament.

“I have made a commitment to the global fight against TB. Please join my team -- pick up the ball and run with me to stop TB,” said Figo.

"TB is a curable disease but it still kills 4400 people a day. Yet just 20 US dollars can save a life through effective TB treatment," said Dr Marcos Espinal, Executive Secretary of the Stop TB Partnership. "TB can be stopped only with sufficient will and sufficient funds. We welcome Kempinski Hotels as a valued partner and thank them for their support of the Luis Figo Stop TB Campaign, which we hope will open the hearts and minds of millions of people around the world, spurring them to take action against TB."

“Joining the Luis Figo Stop TB Campaign and becoming a member of the Stop TB Partnership is a very important first step in Kempinski’s corporate responsibility programme,” said Reto Wittwer, Kempinski’s President and CEO. “We wanted to launch our corporate responsibility programme with a cause we feel passionately about. We’re in the people business and we have staff and guests in countries where TB is still a problem. This allows us to support a global issue yet act locally. This international campaign will be promoted in our hotels throughout Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe. Hopefully, the campaign in our hotels will attract donors who will support this shared goal of a TB-free world. I believe this is a great opportunity for Kempinski to help raise awareness among both guests and staff worldwide.”

Kempinski hotels participating in the corporate campaign will provide their support by distributing the Luis Figo Stop TB campaign postcard in each guest room. The postcard includes facts and information about tuberculosis, its cures and how the Stop TB campaign aims to eliminate TB. Kids Clubs operated directly by participating hotels will also have the Figo Educational Comic Book available for children to read. At the same time, Kempinski will launch an educational drive for staff in its hotels.

On October 16, 2007, the Grand Hotel Kempinski, located in the heart of Geneva, officially reopens its doors.

After two years of renovation works the hotel offers stylish, contemporary accommodation, a new restaurant concept and ample conference and meeting space.

The Grand Hotel Kempinski Geneva is beautifully located at the shores of Lake Geneva, with unrivalled views over the Jet d’eau (Geneva’s famed water fountain) and the Mont Blanc. The refurbishment started in 2005 and was conducted in two stages. Skillfully designed by tjca architects from Geneva, the aim was to make the lake the reference point of all public areas and to blur the border between building and water.

The public areas have been designed to make guests feel welcome and at ease. Deceptively simple materials have been used, such as velvet in beige and burgundy tones with the occasional touch of light blue to subtly recall the ever-present lake. All 423 rooms, including 43 suites feature all modern amenities such as satellite TV and wireless Internet access.

An entirely new concept in food and beverage, the second floor – hence the name ‘FLOORTWO’ – places side by side a restaurant, a lounge and a bar. While each venue has its own specific feel and culinary style, guests can choose to order from the menu of any of the venues. During summer, the restaurant and bar will be extended by the spacious, maritime-styled terrace, again offering magnificent views over the lake.

The hotel hosts the largest in-house conference facilities in town, where a 630 m² ballroom features prominently. Other amenities include an indoor salt-water swimming pool with sauna, massage facilities, steam bath and techno-gym equipment. On the ground floor, a large luxury shopping arcade features an art gallery, deluxe jewelers and fashion boutiques.

Grand opening: 16. October 2007
No. of rooms: 380 rooms, 43 suites
Restaurants: FLOORTWO, including a restaurant with terrace, a lounge, a bar
Function rooms: 10, with 630 m² ballroom
Amenities: wellness and fitness area with indoor pool, shopping arcade
Opening rate: rates start from €270 (approx. £187)

Bavarian Delight: Munich and Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski Celebrate Their Combined 1000th A

While Munich is celebrating its 850th anniversary, the city’s landmark grand hotel, the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski, turns 150. Numerous cultural and culinary events will reflect the fascinating history of one of the oldest and most established hotels in the world.

In 1851, the Bavarian King Maximilian II arranged for a competition between the best architects of the time. The architects were asked to submit plans for a splendid boulevard that would stand comparison with the most elegant ones around the globe. In 1852, the building works for Munich’s best known street, the Maximilianstrasse, began. The centrepiece of this magnificent new boulevard was the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten, ordered by the king to become ‘the most beautiful hotel in the city’. The royal requirement was met by the architect Rudolf Gottgetreu through the hotel’s outstanding architecture, the finest fittings and the most stylish furniture. It also included the latest technical innovations of the dawning industrial era, such as electricity, running water, and paternoster elevators.

The First World War and the ensuing revolution put a stop to the rise of the grand hotel and the City of Munich had to step in to avoid the closure of the property. In 1926, the brothers Alfred and Otto Walterspiel acquired the hotel. Alfred was a renowned chef and gastronome, the only German one with a global reputation during that time, Otto a skilful businessman and manager. They opened the ‘Restaurant Walterspiel’ which gave the hotel an international appeal. In 1970, the property was bought by Kempinski and since then has been called the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski Munich.

Anniversary Events
• On the last Friday of each month in 2008, guests are invited to participate in a ‘Trend & Tradition’ dinner. A five-course dinner combining traditional and innovative cuisine will be served in the historical setting of the Nymphenburg salon. Price per person is EUR 98 (approx. £ 74) or EUR 150 (approx. £ 113) for two.
• On 11th May 2008, former owner Alfred Walterspiel would have turned 127. From 8th to 11th May a special 7-course menu, starting with Walterspiel’s favourite drink ‘Dom Bénédictine on ice’ and followed by a selection of his favourite dishes, will be served. Price per person is EUR 127 (approx. £ 95) including aperitif and corresponding wines.
• A journey into the past and a glimpse into the future are offered by historian Ingrid Mayerhanser, who will captivate guests with impressive and curious anecdotes and facts during traditional guided tours of the hotel (EUR 25/£ 19 per person).
• During a kitchen party on 13th March 2008, guests will literally have their fingers in every pie, cooking alongside former and current chefs of the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten (EUR 82/£ 62 per person or EUR 150/£ 112 for two persons, incl. beverages).
• There is no celebration in Munich without including the most famous one of all, the Oktoberfest. To warm up for this event, the kitchen team proposes a Bavarian Kitchen Party. Welcoming guests in traditional costumes – ‘Lederhosen’ and ‘Dirndl’ – the hotel’s kitchen crew will serve Bavarian specialties and a chilled ‘Maß’ on 11th September (EUR 50/ £38 per person including beverages).

For further information and to book any of the above mentioned events, please contact the hotel directly.
