Explore Piran, Istria and beyond

Life is made up of natural beauty and man-made masterpieces. Nature offers the Lipica Stud Farm (40km), where they have bred since 1580 the white Lipizzaner horses. There is also the dramatic Postojna Cave and Skocjan Caves (60km), which have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Man offers the medieval town of Piran (3 km), and of course magnificent Venice (200 km).

Bled, the only Slovenian island

Walk around the lake, taste the delicious Bled cream cake, visit the Bled castle or go on a boat ride to an island with a church and ring the wishing bell to have your most secret wishes to come true.
Lipica Stud Farm

The Lipica Stud Farm is the cradle of all Lipizzaner horses in the world. Nowadays it is one of the most beautiful cultural and historical monuments of Slovenia, its rich history reaching back to the year of 1580. It proudly carries on the tradition of breeding and selecting pure-breed horses to this day. In the 1960s, the Lipica Stud Farm established the Classic Riding School, which still participates in worldwide equestrian events.

The Skocjan Caves

Due to their exceptional significance, the Skocjan Caves were entered on UNESCO's list of natural and cultural world heritage sites in 1986. Ranking among the most important caves in the world, the Skocjan Caves represent the most significant underground phenomena in both the Karst region and all of Slovenia. Together with the underground stream of the Reka River, they represent one of the longest Karst underground wetlands in Europe. Open all year. Entrance fee: €15 per person.
Predjama Castle in Postojna

For more than 700 years it has perched proudly on a rocky cliff over 100 metres high, powerful and defiant – an impregnable fortress. Today's castle dates from the Renaissance period, but the date of its construction is confirmed by the coat of arms of its owners, the Kobenzl family, as 1583. Concealed behind it is an older nucleus – the original cave castle.

Postojna Cave

The Postojna Cave is a 20-km long Karst cave system, a web of underground passages, galleries and chambers. Visitors can satisfy their curiosity by learning about how the caves came to existence by having a look at the passages and chambers and above all by looking at stalagmites rising up from the floor of the cave and stalactites hanging down from its roof. Visitors will understand how they are joined as pillars, creased as curtains and lined up in all kinds of fantastic forms. The cave is easily accessible without any steps or any strenuous uphill walking. Part of the visit to the cave is done on the train and part of it on foot. Open all year. Entrance fee is €22 per person.
The Secovlje salt pans

The Secovlje salt pans are today the largest coastal marsh wetlands (650 hectares), and at the same time the most important. The variety of bird species found in this area, under the aspect of nesting and wintering, is much larger than on any other comparable locality of its kind. In 2001, the area containing Secovlje Salina Nature Park and the Museum of Salt Making were proclaimed as a cultural monument of national importance. The salt pans are extremely important as an extraordinary assortment of various ecosystems thrive there, in its diverse and transitioning environment of sea water, brackish, fresh water and land. Open all year. Entrance fee is € 5 per person.
Tartini's House

At Tartini Square visit Tartini's House, dating back to the 14th century. Marvel at the Tartini Memorial Room, dedicated to this great Baroque composer, himself a native of Piran, which displays several curious items: the composer's death mask, his violin and staff line maker, a copperplate print of Tartini's dream and an oil on canvas portrait of the Maestro.

Tartini Square

Tartini Square bears the name of Piran's most illustrious son, the famous violinist and composer Giuseppe Tartini (Piran 1692 – Padua 1770). This is Piran's main square, which got its present layout in the 19th century, and it is here we find some of the town's most important buildings and monuments. The Town Hall, the Venetian House built in the 15th century, the Tartini Monument from 1896, sculpted by Antonio dal Zotto, and the Tartini House from 1384, one of the most ancient buildings on the square and home to the Tartini Memorial Room. There are also stone flagpole columns from the 15th century, the Palace of Justice and Saint Peter's Church from 1818.
Saint George's Cathedral

Saint George's Cathedral was first built in the 12th century. Also visit the nearby Saint George's Parish Museum, which features a treasury, a lapidarium and an archaeological cave. Along the same street, you will find the “Georgios” Pastoral and Cultural Centre.
Piran “Sergej Masera” Maritime Museum

The museum collects studies and presents the maritime history of Slovenia's Adriatic coast and of the country in general, including economic activity related to seafaring. It features archaeological, nautical, cultural and ethnological collections, as well as departments focusing on salt harvesting and fishing.

Aquarium

Enjoy the company of almost 200 inhabitants of the sea. In the basins around 200 guests from the deeps of the submersed world can be admired; of which around 140 various kinds of sea organism. There to be acquainted with are common octopus, common snapper, sea-bream (dentex, braize), wrasse, ormer, bass, in our parts rare red mullet and many more of the sea animals.

The Piran Museum of Underwater Activity

The Piran Museum of Underwater Activity includes a focus on diving in Slovenia and a world history of diving, with emphasis on the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, the Kingdom of Italy, the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the Republic of Slovenia.
