Poreč

Poreč is famous not only for the wonderful mosaics of Euphrasian Basilica. The footsteps of Rome, the splendour of Byzantium and the refined witnesses of Venice are here integrated into everyday life.

A true cultural-historical jewel, the present three-aisled Euphrasian basilica was built around mid-6th century on the site of the first basilica from the second half of the 4th century. The entire complex with well-preserved and beautiful mosaics is considered to be one of the most important monuments of Byzantine art in the Adriatic. It has been inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1997. Take a walk through the old town. Walking down Decumanus maximus which crosses with Cardus maximus you will discover patterns of Roman Parentium. The Marafor square with the Roman Forum (1st century) and Roman temple remains, the remains of medieval walls on the waterfront, the Pentagonal Tower (13th century), the House of Two Saints (12th century), the Romanesque house (13th century), the Heritage Museum (18th century), the gothic Palazzo Zuccato (15th century) - a visit to Poreč is like a journey through past eras of the city of mosaics.
