This year, March 29th will mark Earth Hour 2014!
Earth Hour is the largest annual event worldwide that raises awareness about climate change. Participation involves just one small action: switching off all lights for one hour from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm.
This global initiative began in Australia in 2007 and has spread to more than 140 coutries since, including 7,000 cities and towns around the world.
In Dubai, Earth Hour is spearheaded by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) in partnership with the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and EWS. The aim is to highlight the environmental sustainability and promote the rational use of electricity. A fantastic initiative which we as Kempinski here in Dubai have supported for many years.
There will be a celebration at the Bay Avenue Park in Downtown Dubai to encourage residents to participate in Earth Hour. The celebration will start at 5 pm and will finish around 8.30 pm with the Earth Hour Walk.
Many of Dubai’s landmarks including Burj Khalifa, Downtown Dubai, Dubai International Airport and other landmarks in the Emirates are switching of their lights for the hour.
DEWA has achieved a reduction of 200,000 kilowatts per hour of electricity and 120 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions during Earth Hour in 2013. What an Amazing achievement!
To honour Earth Hour and in line with our Green Inspiration program, Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates will be participating by switching off all of our façade lights and public areas for one hour, on March 29th.
