Beauty and the Sun

Summer is a beautiful time of the year. As the sun gets stronger and it becomes hot and humid though, a physiological operating principle called ‘pitta dosha’ that governs heat and water in our bodies may become aggravated and imbalanced. This in turn can result in sleeping issues, a short temper, skin problems, heartburn and hair loss. Softouch Spa at the hotel specializes in ‘urban Ayurveda’ medicine and treatments and below are a couple of suggestions for diet, exercise and daily routine that allow us to enjoy the summer season and at the same time remain calm, balanced, healthy and happy.

  • It is important to drink a lot of fluids throughout the day, not only to reload the moisture lost due to the heat and sweat but also to help flush toxins out of the body and keep skin looking clear and lustrous. Explore some of the beverage options below to make it more interesting and varied:
    • Herb or spice teas, such as mint, cardamom and fennel, provide therapeutic benefits and have a cooling effect
    • Add a few slices of cucumber or mint to your water
    • Coconut water is so simple and delicious
    • Milk is a cooling beverage that also supplies nutrients to your skin and helps to keep it from drying out. Drink a cup of milk every day, and also combine milk with ingredients like almond flakes and dried grapes
    • Butter milk, lemon juice, lassi with mint or cilantro, sugarcane juice are also excellent choices in summer
  • Eat lot of fruits, vegetables and herbs that supply the skin with essential nutrients and also keep your skin cool. Carrots, lettuce, summer squash such as zucchini, celery, asparagus and leafy greens are good vegetable choices
  • Melons, Pomegranates, Grapes, and Pineapples should be freshly blended and drink at room temperature
  • Poultry meat and cold water fishes are also ideal for summer
  • Reduce the intake of fried items, and alcoholic beverages. Avoid food with pungent, acid and salt tastes
  • Avoid Ice-cold water or food as it will disrupt digestion

  • Get plenty of rest each night. Keep your bedroom cool, dark and comfortable and sleep on cotton or linen sheets. Try to go to bed early as this way you will wake up earlier with a clear and healthy skin as well as sparkling eyes
  • Make sure you exercise for at least 15-30 minutes daily, preferably in the outdoors. It improves the circulation of blood and ensures that your vital body organs get ample Prana Vayu (life-giving oxygen). Moreover, when you exercise, the body sweats profusely, helping your skin breathe freely
  • When you feel stressed, angry or frustrated, your skin will show it over time as furrows and small lines and breakouts. Practice calming yoga poses or meditation to stay serene and help your body and mind manage stress. Use essential oils, such as rose, sandalwood and lavender to keep mind and heart balanced. Yoga Pranayama can do wonders…

So with all of the tips above we hope you will be able to keep your body and mind revived and refreshed for the summer.
