KÖNIGSTEIN FORTRESS – ALREADY CONQUERED?
Königstein Fortress is situated atop a mountain plateau inside Saxon Switzerland National Park, located about 35 kilometres from Dresden. In the past, the Fortress was an unconquerable fortification and today it invites visitors to go on adventure. Discover more than 50 impressive buildings and wide green spaces in an area that covers 13 football fields. The mountain fortress is situated
247 metres above the Elbe Valley, offering fantastic panoramic views of Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland, all the way to the foothills
of eastern Erzgebirge and Dresden.
In earlier times, soldiers and their families lived in the town. Nowadays, the deepest fountain of Saxony (152.5 metre), the first
Saxon garrison church (1676) and the oldest German barracks (1590) remind us of past eras. Another highlight is the giant wine cask at Königstein. The installation is made of 12,227 green wine bottles, showing the enormous dimensions of the legendary August the Strong’s wine cask (238,600 litres). Exhibitions, guided tours and audio tours also for children offer a glimpse of what daily life was like at the Fortress.
