    The magnificent Museum of Applied Arts, itself a characteristically Hungarian Jugendstil building by Odon Lechner, is adorned with Zsolnay’s signature glazed roof tiles, and was opened at the 1896 Millenium Expo. In its specialist exhibition, it presents unique furniture from the vibrant era that coincided with Hungary’s coming of age at the turn of the century. Hungarian Jugendstil, in its various applications, made itself manifest in furniture design, and much like elsewhere, it fused local characteristics with its universal aesthetics.

    The events of Summer on the Chain Bridge are opened by the Bridge Festival and the Budapest Carnival, which originally marked the withdrawal of Soviet troops. Budapest’s landmark bridge is taken over by pedestrians for eight themed weekends, with performances by bands, theatres and dance groups, on the bridge and surroundings on the Pest and Buda sides of the river.     The Gala Concert performed by the 100 Gipsy Violinists’ Orchestra the day before December 31 is now a musical year’s end tradition – a special treat featuring original folk music as well as the works of Liszt, Brahms, Strauss and Khachaturian, among others.

    The 100 Gipsy Violinists’ Orchestra was established in 1985.
